Outer drive shaft, nick on seal surface

I pulled my VP DuoProp drive apart to put some new seals to stop a leak around the outer shaft and found that the shaft has some nicks on it. I don't want to put it back together because the nicks will probably ruin the new seal. I can take some fine grit sandpaper and deburr the nicks, but I don't think it will seal well.

I am thinking my best bet is to take it to a machine shop and have them machine away the nicks. The seal size is currently 45-58-7 and I found that Mercedes uses a 43-58-7 if the shaft needed to be cut down that much in that area.

Any advice?

A speedy sleeve may work or replace the shaft or have it machined are about the only options I know of.

Thanks, I'll look into the speedy sleeve.

I'm hoping that a machine shop can just barely weld those 2 nicks and then machine it back to the original size. I wonder if a typical automotive machine shop that decks engines and other rebuild tasks could perform such a repair...

If the shaft is not heat treated like the surface of gears then probably so. If heat treated probably not. BTDT I agree that the surface needs to be filled in and turned back down.

What is the black ring to the right of the area that needs to be filled in. If that can be melted, it would have to be removed first. I dont know your location, but here in the SE WI area, there are alot of Tool & Die shops. A GOOD, tool welding shop, can laser weld it, and be machined, and polished back to like new. The best way is to remove the shaft. Im suprised all the time with the welding that can be done, with the skilled welders at the shop we take tools to, for repair.

Speedi Sleeve repair of prop shaft to fix seal surface

I repaired my Duo Prop outer prop shaft from damage from when the previous owner tried to remove the seals without disassembly. I was able to install a Sleeve that covered the entire seal area and completely encompassed the damaged shaft area. The sleeve I used was part number 99175 and is .75 in long. My shaft was just slightly larger than the max shaft size for that sleeve, however I wanted to try it because the proper sleeve was too short and would require 2. The sleeve installed easily with a 2" PVC pipe and a reducer that I custom filed to fit the sleeve rim tightly. Here are some pictures for anyone else who finds themselves in the same situation.

Below: Roller bearing sleeve pushed towards gears to allow installation of the sleeve. The bearing sleeve was heated with a heat gun and then pressed on a press using a bearing separator tool from Harbor Freight. I found it interesting that there was previous damage hidden under the bearing sleeve that had been ground away. It didn't worry me though because it won't affect sealing.

I ended up repairing the shaft with a sleeve and it couldn't have gone better. I took the shaft to a machine shop and the owner didn't want to machine the surface because it was case hardened.
