ok i was test running my outboard ok i need a answer here, when am using the earmuffs hose system, the outlet water remains cold through engine block, as that because of the fast hose flow, should the water not be warm when engine is running to take heat away from head?, or is this a t stat failure? i have a old school johnson 1979 stinger long shaft just got running, 75ELR79R , ordering a new one anyway. impeller is ok for now water flow out hole.

I moved you into the outboard section.

I wouldn't expect the water to be too warm. It's not making multiple circuits of the engine; just one before it exits.

If by "outlet" water you mean the water from the tell tale then I think on that model it will be cold...

Not sure that motor has a tell-tale squirt hole, or does it? If it does, the tell-tale squirt comes before the water enters the powerhead. My guess is that by running it on muffs, you are supplying enough water pressure to open the pressure relief valve that parallels the thermostat--in other words bypassing the thermostat.

Whatever the case, I say it over and over again, you cannot test a water pump by running on muffs. The pump is not pumping when you are doing that--only allowing hose water to pass through.

Yes # 106and 107 in the parts diagram at http://ww2.iboats.com/Cylinder-And-...133463--session_id.296871401--view_id.1533202

what's the running temps on these outboards? say a hot mid summer day lake , with cowl cover on i did notice those cowls trap heat , i didn't notice a air vent? , guess the water cooling is enough for them. i invested in a infrared heat reading gun to get approx temps next time i run motor ,cowl on and off. whats the redline temps? turn it off if it reaches?

The air vent is under the rear grab handle. Would not run without them. The pee hole will never get warm on that motor. Warm water will come out the 6 holes above the prop when the thermostat opens. And maybe out of the 2 idle relief holes.
