I just added a new email address (user) to my Outlook Express 6.0. It is a secondary user. When I switch identities to that user, a login box pops up. All I need to do is to cancel it to be able to use the account but I would like it not to pop up in the first place.

When I set up the user, I did not check the 'require password' box. I even deleted the user and readded it in the event I did something wrong but I can's see where that would have been.

How can I keep that box from popping up when I go to that account?

I thought that the email was usable after the login box would go away after clicking OK or CANCEL. It turns out that if I hit send/receive, the box pops back up. Once again, I left the 'use password' check box blank when I set up the account, so there is no password to enter.

It's been a while since I messed with Outlook Express but seems like you can have (or not have) passwords for each identity. This is a privacy feature.

Once you're "logged in" to one of the identities and hit send/recieve you have to authenticate with the mail server before you can receive mail. You will not have the luxury of not having a password for that part, though you should have an option to let Outlook Express remember it for you so you don't have to type it every time.

That must be the key because the password that is requested is the one that I used when I set the account up with the server. That was a mystery to me.

When I set the account up with OE, I must not have checked the 'remember password' box because I did not think I was requiring a password in OE.

Where can I go to to get it to remember the password? When the logon box comes up, that option is inactive (grayed out)

Re: Outlook express logon question.**mini update**

Thanks to i386's explanation of the mail server needing to see a password to authenticate the request for mail by Outlook Express, I was able to resolve my issue with OE asking for a password everytime I opened the mail.

I deleted the secondary user account in Outlook Express, then reloaded it. The setup wizard then asked for 'the' password and gave me the opportunity to check 'remember password'.

I had ignored this box before because I did not realize that this password was soley to satisfy the mail server (comcast)

Now I can open up the email account without the logon box.

Thanks i386!
