Over heat alarm

1996 V6 Merc 150 HP. How does one verify that the overheat alarm is indeed working properly. I have read in manual to ground (tan/blue wire) to check alarm. Ground mine and alarm sounds, but how do I know it will ground and sound when hot??? All responses welcomed.

grandx - I read that you can hook positive and negative right up to the alarm to make sure it works. I think you have already checked that. <br />I have heard from the forum that you can heat the thermostat to make sure it will pick up the proper temp. at which your engine will overheat. there was a posting a few weeks ago concerning the same problem. I will check too, but try a few weeks back. I remeber seeing it because I too am having a problem!
