I have a johnson 200 that I had a power head done on it less than a year ago.
last week end I was out on the lake and sputter and tow in.
the mechanic that rebuilt the power head says it over heated?
how does a new engine over heat?
He's saying not covered under the warranty?
I am at my witts end now I have put out quite a bit of money to him am I being scammed? I am so bummed out about this,it is causing friction with my home life as well. (As you might know.)

Re: over heat? new power head?

The lower unit of an outboard can pick up a plastic bag which will cause the engine to overheat, among other things.

However, that engine has two heat sensors with a warning horn. The horn would be either within a control box or under the center control console. The sensors cause the horn to sound as a warning long before the engine is hot enough to do any damage.

To test to see that the warning system was put into effect as it should have been when rebuilt, do the following.

Engine NOT running but have the ignition key in the ON position. Look at the top portion of the cylinder heads.... you will see a TAN wire protruding out of each head. Ground out the wire to the cylinder head..... the horn should sound. Does it?

Re: over heat? new power head?

thanks Joe,
no alarms at all I have been in contact with the mechanic and he is gonna honor the warrantee on the motor.
i have to pay for the machine work though, which is much cheaper than the cost of a full repair.
and the new warrantee will start all over. I did express my disappointment with the situation.
this forum has answered several questions and is very helpful.
thanks again.
