over heating trouble

Ok so I have a 89 145hp force outboard. It keeps wanting to overheat or at least the alarm starts going off after being on the water for a couple hours, or sooner if we are are just idling or cruising slowly.

I know thatost if tge time this points to a water pump issue but it seems the water is pumping fine. So what else can cause the motor to over heat? Thanks

Re: over heating trouble

They didn't make a 145 in 89??Pics?Serial# Model#?
The impeller is #1
The exhaust housing could be clogging.

How old is the impeller?

Re: over heating trouble

The impeller was "suppose" to have been replaced before I baught the boat so it would be 6 - 8 mths old. It shoots a good amount of water out.

Could it be a problem with the timing?

The 1st time out it seemed to idle low and was hard to start & would the die when u went to put it in gear. It would do this. A little then once u got it in gear it would run great as long as u didnt sit and idle for to long then it would buzz agian.

So we adjusted the throttle linkage and that seemed to help greatly. It cranked on 1st try and went right into gear. This worked the next 2 weeks but has slowly started overheating & taking a little longer to start

Re: over heating trouble

Assuming there is no misfiring in the engine, the most likely caused could be scale build up in the water ports or the thermostat. Remove the thermostat cover and you can tell readily if scaling is the problem due to calcite or rust build up in the thermostat housing.

Re: over heating trouble

Thanks. Were is the thermostat housing located? Sorry new to boats.

Is this a problem?
I pulled the lower unitand replaced the impeller like the forum showed. The impeller was bent but not in to bad a shape. But my problem came after I replaced thelower unit.
Everything lined up and I believe it was correct. So now when I hook up the ear muffs the water spits and sputters out the 2 holes and pours out the exhaust snout at the bottom.
I do not remember it coming out there at all the last time.
Is this normal or did I mess aomething up when replacing the impeller?

Its a 89 force 125hp
Serial # 1751
Model # 1254x8B

Thanks for the help

Re: over heating trouble

Sounds like it didn't align right when you re-installed.
The pickup tube has to be in the right spot.
Post a pic of the pump housing.
The white adapter still in the top of the pump?
Thermostat is on the top of the cylinder head.Above the top spark plug.
It can be hard to remove.Spray with PB Blaster.Let set for a day or 2 and spray a few times.
Then tap the screws with a hammer/screwdriver and try to undo.
