I just picked up a 10ft aluminum jon boat and I plan on putting a 6hp evinrude fisherman on it in the spring to play on the river with. (small river) too much horse. The boat has not horse rating plate on it.

Re: over horsed?

Sounds like a lot to me for a 10'er...What is the brand? I would say a 3HP would be closer to the rating. Don't want to have problems on the Meramec....

over horsed?

Sounds like a 6 HP would be fine. I had a merc 25 hp on a ten foot aluminum boat on my camping trip. Rented the boat and it was the only available boat. Just took it real slow. Good Luck!

Re: over horsed?

use a long gas line and put the tank in the front. or atleast the middle. how you load the boat will mean a lot.

Re: over horsed?

Lowes Little Jon 10 footer is rated for 3 hp.
It is 48 inches at its widest point and 32 inches at the bottom the max weight is 275lbs, 2 people Not sure how they figure that 2 145 pounders would be 290 lbs.
Add a motor and gas tank you would be at about 390
lbs.I guess the point is if you are 180 and you bring a friend and cooler and gear motor and tank oars etc be careful.

Re: over horsed?

I had a 12' Lowe Lake John (wide with high sides) with a 7.5. Would have carried a 9.9 easily.

Back in the 50's I was on the White River in Ark and the boat of choice was a 12-14' river john (narrow with low sides) with 6 hp Martins. None of them felt overpowered so I doubt that chopping 2 ft off the length would have put you in harm's way. Would put 2-3 people in them and head out to an old tree with a bucket of crickets and a cane pole. Perch laid out both sides of your hand....if you could get your hand around them.

Re: over horsed?

Most of the 12' aluminum boats would not even plane on a 6HP and are rated for max 10hp, so I would have to believe that a 6HP is minimal for your older 10' boat.

I have a 2001 Princecraft 12' that weighs 90 pounds, stripped. Coming up-river with a 6HP is slower than walking backwards

Really wasn't talkin' about getting busted. Just erring to the side of caution...I'm sure you could hang a 6,10 or larger HP on there. How prudent that would be I'm not sure...Also makes me wonder why alot of folks on here strongly advise against going even a little bit over the HP rating on larger boats, but when it comes to small ones, it seems it doesn't matter....

Hear you tas; I did think I was in hog heaven then.

Alan, wonder if that "thing" of yours would fit on there.

Back in the late '60's a friend built a boat and put one of the Rude 60 hp V4's on it. Thought he was really going to go somewhere.

First time out he goosed it and ripped the transom out of the boat; yes the engine submerged; cables kept him from loosing it. LOL but wasn't funny to him. Didn't mean to laugh. Some things you just can't help.

Re: over horsed?

well after I put a new transom in it I 'm going to give it a whirl. I'll probably have to build it up to get the cavitation plate to sit right. I have some 6/4 oak laying around that should work nicely.
