Hi all
Firstly the engine is a 1990 60 HP Evinrude. I am experiencing some problems with overcharging but I can't narrow down just exactly what the problem is. The voltage had appeared a little high on the gauge but now I have a fried battery, tach, fishfinder ( that wasn't even on) and gas gauge. I followed the manual and checked both the rectifier and the stator. The motor doesn't appear to have a voltage regultor. Both checked out according to spec, at the time. I purchased a new battery and checked all the wiring for short or breaks or damage. No apparent problems. I installed the new battery, and the portable lake and started the motor. I then put my meter across the battery to check voltage and got what was a normal reading, about 13 volts for a short period of time and then the voltage started to climb. I shut the motor off when the voltage climbed to 16.5 volts fearing more damage. Not wanting to be without a boat for the balance of my vacation I searched in vain to find a dealer who might be able to give me some answers. No luck, even with a detailed desciption of my problem the answer was always "sorry sir you'll have to bring it in". I thought about how you can run a car without an alternator so I disconnected the stator and it has run fine since without it being connected. I just have to charge the battery every two days. I did all the checkes according to the manual 3 or four times but always came up with the same readings for the rectifier and stator. I tried reconnecting the stator with the same results climbing voltage after a short time. I don't know how high it went but it must have been pretty high to damage all of this equipment. Now that my vacation is over and i have some more time to do some fixing instead of playing I was hoping some of you out there might have another answer other than what's in the manual before I start replacing a stator at $300.00 a pop. Thanks

Re: overcharging evinrude

Outboards have been using unregulated charging systems for well over 25 years, usually with only 4 or 6 amp outputs. If the voltage rises too high, turn on the running lites to absorb some of the excess power. Most of the time, high voltage is due to a faulty or undersized battery, low water levels, or the use of a low-maintenace one. Putting another battery in parallel will increase capacity and lower the voltage. Be sure to check the water often.

I tried to turn on some of the remaining items but the voltage continued to rise. Does anyone know of an aftermarket voltage regulator that could be added or something that could be modified to work in this situation.

Thanks

Wipper

Napa has a Merc replacement for systems up to 40 amp. (plenty for yours) It looks like a nice and easy unit to mount. Might be worth checking out....

PN# 18-5743

Again Mr Schematic you have found a solution for me. I will check out NAPA locally.
Many thanks and I'll update you when I get my results.

Re: overcharging evinrude

Had the same trouble with 1996 115 SPL. Mechanic installed a water cooled voltage regulator from OMC which corrected the problem. Tried rectifier, stator, bad battery etc. etc. and found that the water cooled regulator was the answer. It hasn't overcharged in 2 seasons. Also, you shouldn't have to run accessories to absorb extra voltage. Get the problem fixed so you don't have the mess of battery acid all over like I did!
Good luck!!

Re: overcharging evinrude

The regulator from a 90hp V4 will not fit your motor. It is very expensive, but a good tech can wire in the air cooled regulator from a late model 70hp.

Hey Bushleaguer
Another good idea. You wouldn't happen to have the part number for that OMC voltage regulator would you
Thanks
