Boat ran fine after being out of water for some time, at least ten minutes. slowed down for marina and upon engaging throttle, warning horn came on and engine sputtered some. Shut off and started again, horn stayed on. checked oil and water was still coming from tell tale. Had to idle back to ramp. Suspect overheat, waterpump or thermastat. At home, horn not engaged.

1992 Evinrude 120 - Once the warning horn came on it was a constant tone and never went off. When I got back home I cranked it again and there was no horn. Probaby cooled off as 30-45 minutes passed since I took the boat out of water. Thanks

When was the waterpump seviced last? Did you get the motor to accelerate at all to see if more water pressure would cool it down? Reason being that It sounds like it was fine till you slowed down which would lower water pressure maybe because water pump is going out.Ive a buddy who has a 120 and his alarm would sound constantly whenever he was in a no wake zone but if he accelerated it would eventually turn off. He replaced water pump and t-stats and fixed her. Not sure but does this motor have S.L.O.W. if so that would explain the motor sputtering.

Water Pump serviced a year or so ago. As far as I know the motor does not have a SLOW. How can I tell?

Have not replaced T Stats or waterpump. The repair guy looked at Water Pump last year and said it was OK. Believe it or not, this motor has very few hours on it.

You said that that the water pump was service a year or so ago and then you said that the repair guy "looked" at it and said it was OK. So do you KNOW when it was replaced? (You can't generally tell how good an impeller is by looking at it).

My recommendation of water pump and t-stats stand and I'm sticking to my story

Water pump need replacing every few years whether you use it alot or even if it sits. I'd bet new pump and tstats will fix ya.
