Overheat after grounding

Last evening we ran into a sandbank at 20 mph and came to a very abrupt stop. (the shoals of Great Bay are a confusing mismash of various different style floating bouys intermixed with various different style fixed markers marking various channels) No one was hurt and there was still enough daylight for me to get out and push off the bar.
The rest of the trip back, now in darkness, the temp gauge read about 200 degrees. The gague usually reads about 180 but IR of the thermostat housing always reads 140-150. This time when we got back an hour later the IR read 210!
Sorry for the long background.
1) what should be checked after a hard grounding?
2) did I do any damage with the overheat?
3) I will replace the impeller-anything else?

Volvo '95 5.0 FL SX

Thanks for your partience and help.

Ayuh,.... You edited while I was posting.....

1),.. Anything,+ Everything that came in contact with the bottom.....

2),.. Probably,..... If there was a Lack of Water Flow,.... You probably Burnt up all the rubber in the Exhaust....

3),.. You should Back-Flush the system to remove any Sand,+ Debris that entered....
And,... Make sure you find the pieces of the impeller....

Re: Overheat after grounding

Sorry Bondo, you're fast!
1) The outdrive and prop look ok but the trim guage is now reading incorrectly.
2) By burning rubber in the exhaust do you mean that the impeller was burnt and sent through the exahust?
3) last dumb question-from where in the system should I back flush and how can I make sure I find all the impeller pieces?

Thanks!

Ayuh,.....

2),... No,... I mean when the Impeller takes a Dump,... It doesn't move enough Water,...
There for,.. The Exhaust turns into a Dry Exhaust,+ runs at Exhaust Temps, which is Way Too Hot for the Rubber parts of the Exhaust system....

3),... Any loose broken piecs will migrate downstream from the impeller to where ever they get hung up,...

I don't do Volvos,...
So,... Somebodyelse will probably be more Help on this 1...

The first thing you need to do is pull the raw water pump and check the impeller. If all the vanes are theres, you don't have to go looking for them.

You can then hook a garden hose to the inlet hose that goes to the pump and flush backwards out the outdrive. Pull your block and manifold draines and see if you have any sand coming out of the drain holes.

Re: Overheat after grounding

Got to work on the boat this AM before the storms.'
Drained the block and got only a very small amount of sand. Drained the manifolds and only got rust. Back flushed the water intake from the drive and didn't see anything but some small bits of grass. Took off the raw water pump with the intention to replace the impeller but the the vanes all looked perfect and there was no trace of sand so I didn't open it. Put everything back together and ran on muffs and the gauge stabilized on 170-180 like always. Didn't get to run it due to big boomers but it appears to be back to normal.
Thanks for your help. Still not sure what caused the overheat.
