Hi,
I'm getting my 85 90 EV going after a long time sitting. Did the impellar carb kits and lower unit.
I disconnected the VRO and pulled out the tank and wire so I could mix my own. When I went to test the hot alarm by grounding the tan wire on the harness side to the block I got nothing. I know it worked at one time. I cut the lamp cord looking wire that runs from the VRO tank so I could remove it for conversion. Both alarms fail the grounding test. Is it common that the horn will fail? Is there a fuse? I guess I'll have to take the control box off and apply 12 volts directly to the horn to see if it blares. Can anyone suggest an easier way to track this down?
thanks

H90

Re: overheat alarm not working 85 90 horse

Hi H90, I am by no means a expert on out boards but have a lot of experience trouble shooting my horn cicuit. the horn should have 12v on it when the key is on. the horn sounds when one of the sensors grounds the 12v from the horn. it seems like the only one you still have connected is the over heat. grounding the tan wire on the overheat thermo.should sound the horn.you should also have 12v on the tan wire that goes to that same overheat thermo if the horn is good and it has 12v on it and the wire back to motor is not cut.
Also by dis-connecting the "lamp cord"from the oil tank you have di-connected the self test for the horn at initial turn on.unless its a self test horn but i dont know what years they were used. have fun

This may be a silly question, but the key was turned on to the "run" position for the test, right?

Lets clarify that Dave. It should be in the ON, Not Start, position. Just so he doesn't turn the key to start it. I know what you mean, but he may not.. Good question though!! :)

Yes I had the key in the "on" position. Tried the self test slot on the consol by inserting a scew driver and it sparked and blew the 20 amp crank fuse
in the motor. So you say the tan wires that lead to the temp sensors in the heads should have twelve volts when the key is on?

H90
