overheat/engine flush

does anyone know if you can backflush your engine and outdrive? i have a 120 mercruiser with alpha 1 drive and i think i may have blockage from the outdrive to the engine. thanks in advance...Dan

Ayuh,.......... If you drop the Lower Unit to get the Waterpump Out of the Way,......
You can Backflush it thru the Incoming hose off the T-stat housing........

thanks i'll give it a try.anyway to flush lower or just take pump apart to see if any blockage there?

Visual inspection is the best way to check for restrictions.

How about a little history on whats happening and why you think there may be a restriction in the cooling system.

been having overheat problem. installed new water pump in outdrive and engine. new thermostat. checked exhaust manifold, ok. getting water out exhuast ports and thre drive but still overheating. think i might have a restriction on intake hose or thru drive pump.

If the impeller was comming apart and you did not find all the missing pieces it very likely that you have a restriction. Usually restrictions occur between the impeller and the t-stat housing. Common places for restrictions are (but not limited to) the fitting in the drive housing where it passes thru the transom (connects the outside and inside supply hose together), power steering cooler (spliced into supply hose between previously mentioned fitting and t-stat), and t-stat housing.

dropped the lower unit pump ok but the plastic guide tube is shot. melted from overheat. i'll replace and see what happens. thanks all that responded. i'll keep ya updated.
