At a very low tide I stopped to let someone off at a a dock just full of kelp and crap. I was only going 1/2 nm to another dock when my hi temp alarm went off. Reduced to idle speed for remainder of short trip - buzzer stopped after a minute or so. Raised engine - such enough - crap covering part of water intakes. Questions (1) telltale never let up or faltered during all this (someone was watching it). So what exactly is the telltale showing - I thought it was some portion of the exit water, How does engine overheat at a low speed when there is exit water. And (2) I presume there was no damage done - the engine was run at 600 rpm for 2 minutes to get to safety. I believe the owner's manual says you can run at low speed through a temporary overheat.

1993/90deg 225hp

Re: Overheat warning & Telltale

Your supply was restricted, but not stopped. I'm sure your powerhead is fine. Hopefully your water pump is too, but keep an eye on it. The telltale is just excess water being diverted to let you see it dumping on it's way out. The water pump pumps several times the water needed to cool the motor. Most goes out the prop.
