overheat?

Have a 2007 200 hp Yamaha outboard bought new in 2009. Ran fine in 2009. Took it out 1st time 2010, and after idling 10 minutes, idled out to no wake and jumped on it. Went right to half speed and alarm was screaming. Shut down engine and checked for blocked intake. Nothing found so I started back up and ran fine the rest of the day with no problems rest of the year, unless I did something stupid like run aground. Just took it out 1st time this year on Feb 14, and after idling around for 15 minutes, alarm went off again. Shut it off for about 10 minutes and ran fine rest of the day. Went back out Fri to work on electronics and ran up to 45mph with no problems. Don't know what the rest of the year will bring but starting like last year. Only seems to do this after sitting over winter. Mechanic does not find anything wrong. Appreciate any direction anyone can point me. Thanks.

Re: overheat?

Duplicate post. You may want to respond to the "Overheat" that doesn't have the question mark. Can a Mod remove or lock this thread?

Re: overheat?

hey jim try and look at your oil pump, if no oil is getting to the motor it will do what you are saying. i have the same problem and i just bleed the oil and make sure the oil is going through the oil lines and should be fine. the alarm is usually for the oil.

Re: overheat?

Thanks McComas, but I don't think its the oil because the overheat light comes on and the computer shows overheat not oil.

Had a similar problem and found out it was my thermostats... i would run the motor with water pissing out, and eventually the alarm would go off. Pulled the thermostats and found corrosion so boiled them, threw them back on, and never had the problem again. hope that helps...
