Overheating at idle

88 regal , twin 350, alpha one Gen one, raw water cooled
I bought an 88 280 Regal commodore back in Oct that is moored (have owned trailered boats for 15 years and am a mechanic). About two month after the starboard engine began to overheat at idle but anything over 1k RPM would drop down to running tem. Two weeks later the Port side started to do the same?. will overheat at idle but temp would drop with any RPM increase. I took both T housings off, replaced thermostats (142 degree) and checked for blockage but both are fine.
For test purposes I hooked up a known good temp sender and gauge, both engines came to a (idle) running temp of 190 but dropped down to 150-ish once the rpm was brought above 1,000 rpm.
I assumed impeller so I called my local Marina to schedule a haul out. After explaining the situation the mechanic doesn?t seem to think its an impeller issue but something else?.like a blockage.
Im up for ideas and suggestions?at the same time I want to throw this out there. My marina was recently rebuilt, meaning lots of new wood with lots of saw dust in the water? could this be the issue?

Had a similar problem years ago and it was the out drive water pump. A plug was missing causing low flow from the pump. At high speed the water pump on the block would draw enough water to cool the engine. A bad impeller I imagine could cause the problem you describe.

Sounds to me like you are due for new impellers in both drives. They don't last forever. How old are they. If the vanes don't straighten out like they should, they will not pump at low rpm.
Won't be long till they won't work at higher rpm either.

a plug??? what kind of plug?

I also read on here to check for blockage at the power steering cooler (ill be doing this tomorrow) Im trying to eliminate everything before i have to pay for a haulout

I do suspect impellers because the PO kept fantastic records of work done (new manifolds, risers, zincs, shift cables, rams, paint ect.) found nothing regarding impellers. just strange both engines had the same problem at the same time

Ayuh,... That would indicate they're only 22 years beyond their due date...

Impellers are the 1st thing to do in the event of an overheat....

if thats the case then impellers are WAY more durable then Merc would like one to believe.

They seldom last that long.

Re: Overheating at idle

With my experiences on my Alpha 1 Gen 1, overheat at low rpm's are often caused by the white spring-loaded balls not sealing properly, often due to considerable corrosion of the one-piece cast iron T-stat housing. They now have gone back to the original T-stat design, which uses the brass Tee.
