Hi, please help somebody?

I have a 1992 175hp Evenrude OB. and I started it for the 1st time
in about 1 year! It started right up! yet the overheating beep is
sounding! The water is flowing, because I can see a steady stream
flowing out of the motor? So what could it be?
How can I tell if its a false alarm or actual?
Help me please?

Re: overheating beeeeeppp!!!! Help!

If the horn starts sounding as soon as the key is turned to the ON position, remove the TAN wire from the horn while it is sounding..... If the horn continues to sound, the horn is faulty.

If the engine runs for awhile before the horn comes on, and the water is flowing freely as you state, it's possible that a thermostat is sticking closed. Feel one cylinder head, then the other. If one seems unually hot, suspect the thermostat and take them apart to make sure that they aren't salt corroded (whatever), and free the stuck portion of the thermostat.

If you're running the engine on a flushette (hose) have the water on full force. Let us know what you find.

Re: overheating beeeeeppp!!!! Help!

first turn the key on, but dont start the motor...see if the alarm goes off anyway.

second start the motor, let it warm up and touch the heads one at a time...

you should be able to touch the head with out jerking your hand off, because of the heat...you might be able to hold 4 seconds or more...

if you cant hold it for 2 seconds...then it is over heating for sure...

then i would make sure the thermostats are working...

take them out and try them on the stove in a container of water...hang the T-stad dont let it touch the metal pan...
in the manual there is a test for checking the alarm system

good luck
