1988 mercruiser 3.0, points style distributor, had a bad starter, got towed in, ignition coil was red hot couple hours later, little oil bubling out of it, talked to someone here and he said hopefully my selinoid was engaged, got a new one, same deal way too hot, everything seems wired right, boat starts and runs ok, so was wondering if anyone had any ideas?? Thanks

im not geating a positive reading with the key on (not running). got like 1.7 ohms between the two terminals. Should there be a 12 volt constant?

Re: overheating ignition coil m/c 3.0

ok bad batteries in the multi meter, so i got 12v @ the + even when the key is off, im guessing its not suppose to be doing that, if the coil sits on without running will it get very hot? if so this is my problem, should i wire it to the acc. on my key switch? i dont use it for anything else, thanks for the help

Ayuh,....
You Guessed it,... That's Not Right...

I'm surprized the battery isn't Dead all the time....

The Acc. post on the keyswitch isn't the answer Either,....

Finding the Problem,+ Fixing it Is the thing to do.....
Otherwise,... It'll just lead to Other Issues later.....
