Probably a thermostat that's stuck shut. Replace it, and while you are at it, replace the impeller if it's not been done since 2000. Don't run it until you fix these two items.

Re: overheating johnson

Anyone that attempts service on their own engines should have a service manual that's sepecific to their engine. In other words, we can help you if you have a service manual, most procedures are far to detailed to cover here. That said, in general, if you have a set of tools, drop the lower unit. The water pump is located at the top of the lower unit and is driven by the drive shaft that runs between the engine and the gears in the lower unit. The water pump impeller is a rubber device with five or six paddles on it that rotates inside a housing. Even though they look ok, they may not move water efficiently. They should be replaced every couple of years as the only lubrication they get is from the water. Which is also the reason you should never run the engine out of the water without a source of cooling water.
