I just bought this boat 2 weeks ago and once in the lake the boat overheated at higher speeds. I noticed smoke coming out from engine compartment and could also smell like rubber burning at which point I shut it off and called it a day. I later realized I was the cause of the problem since I had started the boat for a few seconds in my garage with NO water running through. I just got a call from shop and they said in addition to the impeller being shot, they also suggest the "valve flapper" since it had also melted. $175.00 there. The mechanic said once these parts are replaced, he can then proceed and start motor and see if no other damage was done to the engine. I am hoping not. Is there a way to know if I fried the motor? While at lake, after it overheated, it would turn over but would not start. the next morning, I started it for 10 secs so it did turn over. Any suggestions are apreciated.

Did you pay attention to the temp gauge. what was it reading. Over 200 degrees will change the tension of the piston rings.

Yes, it did go over 200 deg. The mechanic said there could be a 50/50 chance that the head-gasket could be gone..by the condition of the impeller and exhaust flapper that he is replacing. There is a grommet he has to order..3-5 days of waiting before he even attemps to crank motor.

Your 3L ngine is pretty strong, and I hope you'll be ok.Also have the shifting checked,as the shift cable goes close to the exhaust elbo, and may have heat damage.<br />DHP
