I am lost here.

I have a 99 johnson 90Hp that is bleeding my wallet....

I bought this engine last year and have had the following things replaced
. Piston ( was seized, was like this since I bought it, according to mechanic due to bad oil )

. renewed all piston rings and top bearing while the engine was open

. renewed the VRO unit

. renewed the thermostats

. complete new waterpump

Since all these parts were replaced I had to break in the piston and rings, so I put pre mix in the tank for the first 8 hours additional to the seperat oil tank.

Now I have taken the boat out 4 times and never went over 4800 rpm. And never had a problem.

Today I wanted to go boating and the darn thing was verry hard to start but when it started it sounded and worked ok. The tell tale was normal.

I didn't exeeded 4500 rpm for about 15 min. without a problem, then I took it WOT to 5500 rpm and after about 10sec the overheating alarm sounded and the engine went into slow. I powered down immediatly and shut it down, after 10 min. I started it again and went back to the docks without a problem at 3000rpm.

Can somebody tell me what can be the problem of overheating at wot ??
And is there a possibility that I damaged something when the engine overheated ?

Thanks
Stef

OK, a couple of things -- what spark plugs are you using?

What caused the first failure? I know you bought it broke but the rebuilder has to have a better idea of what went wrong other than "bad oil". And what does he mean by "bad oil"?

Is the timing set correrctly and whats it at?

Did he put in the right water pump?

Since you refer to a VRO pump (which its not if the motor is a 1999) we assume its a carb'd motor, right? If so, (I know its looking like an overheating issue but) were the carbs cleaned during the rebuild?

Hello,

I am using the champion premium stailess steel marine spark plugs equivalant QL78YC.

I think that the first failure had something to do with the bad vro unit too, but his first impression was due to bad oil because there was alot of gunk inside the engine...

The timing I have no idea. but the engine runs verry nice, just the last time it was verry hard to start and then later at high rpm he overheated.

the water pump that was installed is sierra part 18-3392 waterpump repair kit ( bougt here on i boats mall )

he engine is a 2 stroke 1999 with vro ( or vro 2 ) And I will ask if they cleaned the carbs but I do not think so...

if the mechanic didnt clean out your carbs after a rebuild i would find a different mechanic.
be very carefull after the 8 hour pre mix now with a lean carburator you could lean out a cylinder and overheat.

my 2 cents

Re: Overheating problem...

How much trash is in the water where you boat? Could it be possible that you picked up a plastic bag or something to block the cooling water inlets? You tilt the motor up to check and the bag slips off so everything seems fine. I've heard of this happening before...on this site I believe ;)

There is nothing in the water inlets, the pee stream is steady and strong.

Could this be by faulty head gasket and how can I check this ?

Re: Overheating problem...

As Dhadley and Reeldutch said, look into the carbs as a problem. If it's running lean due to a partially clogged high speed jet, it will overheat. Water pump and T-stat would still be suspect also, even if new. When this problem occurs, shut down the engine and pull the spark plugs immediately and see what they look like. Make note of each one and see if one looks alot differrent than the others(Wet, Dry, Etc). That will tell more of the story. If it were me, I'd pull the carbs off right now and clean them myself for my own piece of mind ....

By the way, is this engine used in saltwater??

I'm not familiar with Champion stainless steel spark plugs. Are they OMC/BRP reccommended ?

I only question this because OMC used to not support helicoil spark plug inserts (even though they sold them). They said the stainless steel thread insert could cause hot spots, igniting the fuel prematurely.

DHP
