1965 Johnson 9.5 Sea Horse. Sitting idle 10 years,replaced hoses,changed gear oil,plugs
after replacing impeller put lower unit in barrel and turned shaft with drill, good stream from tube. Removed t'stat and did air and water up and down. Left stat out, reassembled, . Ran in tank,no "pee stream", is there supposed to be one?
Put on boat, low speed 10 min., steam and light spray from exhaust port, engine too hot to touch. What now ? Do i have to pull the head to get to grommet at top of tube ?

Re: Overheating problem

Take the thermostat cover back off and run a piece of weed whacker line through the water ports as far as you can (both directions). Sometimes there is blockage, usually a piece of an old impeller, restricting the water flow. I believe there is a "pee hole" on your motor but, (it's possible there isn't). If there isn't, a spray of water coming from exhaust vent is all you'll see. By the way, it's not good to run a motor without the thermostat. Lot's of guys do that but, the engine needs to maintain it's "working temp" to run correctly.

Re: Overheating problem

Ran weedeater line all directions, blew out with air, cleaned and put in old t-stat. Ran in barrel, gets hot quick!, no pee stream, (really don't know if this motor,MQ--11C, has one). Pulled stat again and saw it was stuck open , will get new one and gasket. Pulled head, passages have minor salt ? corrosion, stuck some line in where i saw holes, then air. Will get new gasket, clean, etc. Any thoughts on what i'm doing or should do?
