Johnson 150 hp 60 degree looper overheating noticed the temp gauge was going past 170 and then alarm sounding stopped engine trolling motor back to dock. once cooled re start and noticed water leaking out the side of the head? Recent impeller new temp sensors recent thermo stats. Both sides over heated port more than the other but noticed water leaking only on the one side? thanks guys.

Re: overheating?

recheck your water pump rebuild, make sure everything is in where it should be.

not sure if this motor has water deflectors, but something to check.

T'stats in correctly?

Check compression and spark.

start with basics before thowing money and parts at it.

Re: overheating?

Compression is 110 in all cylinders. this engine does not have water deflectors as it is a looper. impeller is pumping good water.t stats only go in one way and do open at 140 or so only thing after i replaced impeller i noticed water leaking out the side of one head could this cause the overheat?

Re: overheating?

symptom, not the cause

i'm not familiar with these motors, but start with the basics, and work up.

Is it leaking from a gasket -got water in cyls?

possible piece of old impeller where it shouldnt be?

like i said, start with basics and recheck work before thowing more parts at it.

hopefully someone withmore experience with these motors will be along shortly

Re: overheating?

Yes it is leaking from the head gaskets I am sure. they are rubber o-rings no water in cylinders i put a hose to the pipe with lower unit off and it has good flow through the engine with t stats out. Engine runs good just will not cool

Re: overheating?

It is likely the leaking heads are causing your issue. That is if you are sure the impeller is operating properly. You should fix the leaking head gakets anyway. A sealer needs to be applied around each water port, before the head and oring are installed. I would recommend an OEM Service Manual to guide you.

Re: overheating?

I am sure the impeller is pumping good water. the one I took out had lost it's flexibility. I do have a manual just wanted to make sure before i pulled the heads off this was the problem.

I have pulled heads, the gaskets do not look in good shape and previous owner hadn't used enough silicone it looks like
