overheating.........

Last year I had a new water pump put in and after taking it out in about five minutes it died.The little hose was plugged with some caulk like substance. after fixing that I noticed the coils got so hot the plastic on them melted. The motor runs for about five minutes and when it gets warmed up it dies. Would replacing the coils and thermostat fix this ? This is a Evinrude 35 hp 1981 vintage motor.

Droog.... If this problem did not exist before the water pump was installed, I'd strongly suggest that the lower unit be dropped, then have the water pump dismantled for inspection. It sounds like something was improperly assembled.

I forgot to say that I did replace the new pump that the shop put in with another new pump myself. Somehow the guy at the shop got something in the pee line. He left town shortly after working on my boat or I would have to hunt him down.After I put in the new pump that is when I noticed the melted coils when I took it for a test it was pissing water out fine and I also had replaced the thermo stat at the same time as the pump but not the coils and in about five minutes I was being towed back to the dock. The reason I think the coils may be damaged is I had a old Ford when I was a kid and it did the same thing when the engine warmed up it would die until I replaced the coil.

Run the engine on the ears and heat the coil(s) with a hair drier and see if that kills it. That'll answer your question.<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty

Thats a good ideabut I think Ill have to wait acouple of months to try that as its about 15 below 0 outside now.
