I have a 1961 Johnson 40hp model rdsl-23
It has been running great untill recently when
she started heating up after about 5 min. of running. I have had the impeller and t-stat
changed and it still ran hot with plenty of water
spitting out the moter. I am in the prosses of having the head checked ani new head gasket installed. Anything I missed? I must also say
that upon startup it imeadiatly spits water
and i think this is wrong.

Re: overheating

Ray, remove the t-stat and run it and see if it still gets hot. If not, either you got a bad t-stat or the wrong one.

Re: overheating

Ray-
When you say it's overheating, do you mean it is physically hot to the touch or is there some sort of warning light coming on? Also, check the water passages in the head for any crud that could be blocking the flow. I don't know alot about outboards but I just went through a similar experience with my 1970.

Good luck,
Dan
