I believe I overtightened the nut and the lock pin was bent so as the propeller turned it tightened continually grinding a centimeter out of the housing in lower motor where it connects. My question is it looks as though there is a collar I can replace or do I need entire lower unit of motor

Over tightening of propnut usually is NOT a concern.---------What is a concern is a missing / wrong thrust washer.-------Post pictures or at least a HP / model / serial number.

I agree with the others. Print out a lower unit parts manual page and installation instructions, etc. for you prop and carefully review positions, directions sequence and qty of shims, washers, etc. When you get it out of storage you should know what "Should" be there and you can disassemble and check ...

I checked some diagrams and I'm pretty sure I could buy the collar seperate from the whole lower end unit. Just to clarify I didn't lose the washer I was dreading taking it off at all and would instantly put it in a bag with the prop and would reinstall after each time. I fished at a lake with a 9hp limit where the natives would have a fit when they seen me using a only a trolling motor with a white net around my raised prop i knew the ticket for the hp violation would be more than a prop repair Thanks for all the help

It would be difficult to bend a thrust washer.------They are hefty and go on the shaft BEFORE the prop is put on.

If it was on correctly with correct parts, there is no way that overtightning can damage the lower unit casing.

Sort of not the type of thing to be "guessing" about....and I would be asking firstly

1) You tighten the nut one day (after disassembly or something) and actually knew/noticed it was rubbing then, ran it anyway, then checking it out some time later, the centimeter of wear into the "collar"/lower unit had occurred, so you're thinking you must have over tighten it?

or

2) You tighten the nut one day (after disassembly or something) things spun/seemed normal, ran it, then noticed some time later a centimeter of wear into the "collar"/lower unit has occurred and you are thinking you over tighten it?

The only other way it can happen as you describe is for the hub to have been spun out. If the splined part is no longer one with the bladed part, the bladed part can slide forward under thrust. Easy enough to check as the rubber hub will be shredded if this is the case...

I have seen this sort of damage with the THRUST WASHER missing or the wrong thrust washer !---- No doubt on my part as to what went on.

OP, ^^ my thoughts as well if you're thinking #2 or perhaps something else I was also thinking but more internally......

You might be loosing/lost a forward thrust bearing, if that is going or gone, it would allow the prop shaft to move too far forward and the thrust washer to hit/rub the bearing carrier and/or the prop hub to rub the bullet housing.

Check this by.......push/pull on the prop into/out of the housing, the prop/thrust washer should currently be hitting the housing/carrier. Drain your lower unit, look at the Mag plug/oil for metal pieces.

I have seen this sort of damage with the THRUST WASHER missing or the wrong thrust washer !---- No doubt on my part as to what went on.

This ^^ however is more likely and should have been rubbing on the get go if your thinking #1
