If you have a house cat and want to really have some fun with it, try this.
Buy one of those kiddee fishing kits with a really small rod and reel. The Popiel pocket fisherman works best.
Replace the fishing line with sewing thread or braided line. Then tie a catnip mouse on to the line and start casting and reeling. It is hilarious. You can lay on the couch and have a ball.

Lasers are okay, but with the "Cat Fisher" you get to get some action. Lasers are like shooting fish with a .22: it's just not fishing.

No, you need to get one of those big rubber rats, They sell them at the holloween shop. Put it in some place in the house where the cat won't see it. Then take a plastic mouse on a string and lead the cat to the big rat.. It is so funny. The cat just about has a cartiac arrest or just freaks out. My neighbors cat's hair stood straight up and when I moved the rat, the cat went about 3 ft in air and took off. Have a camera ready.. The picture is worth it...

I'll title this story Cat hunting.

A few years back when my son was about 4 we had a cat. The wife used to shake the box of dry cat food before she fed the cat. No matter where in the house the cat was he would come running when he heard that box shaking.
Christmas morning my son got one of those pop guns that shoots ping pong balls. A few moments after he opened that present I heard the cat food box shaking in the kitchen. Then I heard pop pop pop and a squeal from the cat. David was cat hunting. The funny thing is this cat was so programed to come to that sound that all morning David was able to call in that cat for another sneak attack. By early afternoon the cat had learned to ignore the shaking box.

Just take a piece of 4 lb test fishing line with nothing on it, pull it across the cat's neck and back. They will go airbourne, straight up. I don't think they can see it, but they feel it. Freaks 'em out.

Lasers are fun too. I've run cats right up other people's legs chasing that light.

thats so cruiel, call peta :) :)
I use the cat fishing teqnique to hone my topwater bass skills. to keep from it getting caught takes quick reflexs and when they tire of the game you can cast it and use the 20-30 second then twitch move. works on bass as well as cats.
if ya really want to drive them nuts stick a piece of scotch tape on the paw pad.
I have one thats 11 years old and has been deaf since age 6. sometimes I still have to "gig" him. he wakes up about 3ft up and still gaining altitude :)
keeps his heart working :)

This works best with a kitten (inexperience + lots 'o energy).
Take a roll of paper towel and one of those cat toys which is a feather at the end of a stick. Play with the cat using the feather for a bit, to get it wound up and into chasing the feather. Stick the pole through the paper towel roll, and jiggle the feather to attract the cat. Just as the cat pounces, pull the feather rapidly through the tube. Watch as the cat tries to burrow through the tube.

Another one is to place a laundry basket upside down over the cat. Can you say "turtle"???

Speaking of laundry baskets....

I guess about 10 years ago when I got my first cat I learned first hand (and leg and arm and whatever else wasn't covered by chain mesh) that cats don't like baths.

So, (I love my cat this isn't abuse) what I do now is put about 4" of really soapy water in the bath tub, then get the cat in a covered plastic laundry basket and stick it in the tub. It gets nice and soapy thrashing around in there and then I drain the water and refill with clear water for the rinse cycle.

Drain that out, open the basket and run like hell.

The cat gives you the death stare for about a day or two then comes around again till next time.

Nice kitty.

OMG, that's hillarious!
I do cat-fishing too and I ties a 1/4 oz sinker to the line of a 6'6" spinning rod. My cat would chase the sinker until he tired and breathing hard with his tounge hanging out just like a dog.

I have to admit I have fished for chipmunks with a peanut tied to a flyrod.

As for the cats and the dog the laser pointer is still great.

The remote-controlled motorized rat is fun, too.

When I was in college, I had to wash a cat (long story). It was May, but I had my winter coat, ski gloves, goggles, and a hardhat on, and did the deed in the dorm slop closet. I came out OK, the coat & gloves didn't, and there was quite a crowd in the hall when I opened the door after I finished. It was just a l i t t l e noisy...

Better yet...when I was a kid and went fishing...if things got a little boring, I'd remove the hook and tie a bait fish on the line. Cast it out and within minutes a seagull would swoop down, swallow it and fly away. Give him about a hundred yards of line then start to real em in. It was our version of remote control flying. This might sound cruel, but it never hurt any birds...
