RODBOLT or anyone else...

I've recently developed a loud ticking noise on my 02 OX66 150, 120 hrs, all maintenance performed as owners manual prescribes. the ticking occurs about 98% of the time BUT will at times not occur for the first few seconds after the engine is started...then it will start again. i nor my yami tech think it's a rod knocking. he is leaning towards replacing the O2 sensor - and he agreed with what you have all discussed in the past on this site regarding the O2 sensors issues.

Beyond that all he can say is it may be internal if replacing the O2 sensor doesn't fix it. If not the O2 - what direction would you go from here??

thanks,

giffman

look very close at the draw tube, the sensor wont knock but the tube can. some techs dont remove the tube and holder for cleaning. the sensor can be cleaned without removing the holder and tube. however its kinda like wiping your tail with your hand. if the tube is shiney on the ends its been shifting in the block/holder. are there any other running issues with this motor ?

Rodbolt - thanks for the response...

no other running issues. maybe a slightly rough idle, and an occasional (1 out of maybe 5 mornings at the ramp?) stall after the first few seconds of running. then she'll fire back up on the next key turn and run fine all day.

my tech called back and said the O2 sensor was VERY dirty when he took it apart to inspect. Odd because it was just cleaned about 30-40 hrs ago. Could the fact that I take 3-4 months to go thru a tank of gas and most trips are short 5-10 minute runs at approx 3500 rpm contribute to excessive carbon build up ? Do I need to blow this thing out when I run it and run higher rpm's since my usual saturday morning run is so short ?

lastly, at 120 hrs and with the O2 sensor in the condition it's in - would you just relace it ?

giffman

I would test it
its possible the O2 sensor is running cold. test the heater circuit as well. is the tech removing the holder and tube or just the sensor?
remove the airbox. attach the test harness in the gray and black 2 wire connector. hook up a DVM to the leads. start the engine and allow it to warm up with the gearcase fully sumberged. after a 5 min or so warm up place a finger over the air bypass hole on the #1 throttle shutter. the DVM shoulkd react by going above.75V. when ya remove the finger it should head back towards about .35V. then it should swing rapidly between .35 and about .6V. the meter readings should never stabilize. that sensor is rather pricey. I would test all the plug caps and test the fuel pumps as well. also we need to look at the parts book to see if that motor has recirc valves or just nipples installed in the block. I cant remember what years did and what did not.

I just checked
yep your engine has recirc valves. they will need to be tested as well. some techs are not even aware some yammi V6 motors have them.

Rodbolt - Just got my boat back last week. after my tech cleaned the O2 sensor "port" (drawtube?) the noise is now gone. He said the sensor was VERY dirty overall. Funny since he had just "cleaned it" about 25 hrs ago???

Could the fact that I take 3 months +/- to use a tank of gas, only operate in the 3-3500 rpm range about 80-90% of the time and take short trips (3-5 mileseach way) all contribute to the sensor getting dirty this fast ? Do I need to add some gas stabilizer on a regular basis and blow this thing out (4000-4500 rpm's) when I run it to keep this from happening as often ??

Again, thanks for the help !! I know it probably gets old when guys like me panic and come lookin' for help...but it is MUCH appreciated !!

gifman

The answer is the same for all of those questions. Yes.

yep only kick the RPM to 53-5500. if it wont turn it prop it so it can. ya dont need to hold it there forever but they really need to be abl;e to turn 5600 or so. plus a lot of techs only pull the sensor for cleaning and not the holder and draw tube assy. no sense doing one without the other.
