Does anyone have a recommendation on a wax or compound to use to get rid if the oxidation and faded paint on my 1990 Sea Ray? Boat was covered for two years in the sun so the lines show where the cover was and you can see an obvious paint fade. Maybe the only solution is to have repainted?

You can try a buffer and some 3m rubbing compound, followed by some polish and wax. If that doesn't work, I would suggest wet sanding the oxidation off, then compounding/polish/wax. I wet sanded starting with 600 grit then to 800 then to compound. Others will start at 400 and go to 600-800. Depends on the condition of the Gel Coat.

I went with Meguiars 3 part system. Oxidation Remover on my Buffer, Polish on my DA, and then finished with wax on the DA. The difference was very noticable and I'm happy with it.

Wet sanding with 1000 grit or higher and then use an automotive buffer - wet sanding is a process where you use a special sandpaper for polishing - you can find it at NAPA - make sure to use a higher grit or you can ruin your gelcoat.

I bought some 2000 grit which seems to work awesome. Thanks for the tips!

High speed polisher works great. I used light to medium oxidation remover compound by turtle wax with a wool pad first, then switch to a foam pad. I hand waxed it after. It came out pretty good. Also did some wet sanding on the deep scratches. Here's some before and after pics. Still working on it so have not been able to get any outside pics of it yet.

Whoa!! Be carefull with that 200. That is awfully aggressive, you are going to
be sanding ALOT with 400-600 to get those scratches out. Plus you could go right through your gel-coat easily.

I used a product called Poli-Glow. It is simple amazing. Its a 2 parts system. One is a cleaner you wash and scrub the boat with, the other is the polish. It is not a wax. It simple puts a coat of plastic type material over the boat. Its works awesome. My boat is a 1989 Wellcraft and the gelcoat looks brand new. No joke. The downside, it is expensive. I think it was $80.00 plus shipping. To me, it was WELL worth it. I will now swear by this product!!! Go on there website and take a look. Just type Poli-Glow in google and it is the first one that pops up. Good Luck!!
