Ok, this is my first boat with inboards and while it's out for the winter i wanted to repack the shafts and rudders. The rudders are pretty clear cut, you see the packing nuts and will be a breeze to do. The shafts on the other hand are different. The have no visible nut, but instead a rubber tube about 8 inches long over the shaft. On each end is a stainless clamp, one at the hull. What's the deal?

It could be that you have a "dripless" type stuffing box that uses a seal rather than packing..

Look anything like this one?
Yes, except the rubber isn't ribbed like that. That's what i suspected, but wanted to make sure, Thanks!
