Not necessary. Is quicker and a bit less messy but not much.

Re: packing wheel bearings

Bearing packer= easy greasing. I can pack my bearings with a pair of pliers, a pair of nitrile gloves and a packer and not get a bit of grease on me. I hate the old "grab a palm full of grease and..." action. After years in the auto industry I believe that a packer does a much better job, forces out on old grease and fills the bearing with new grease.
If you are properly equipped, you can reduce the amount of bearing maintenance you have to do. By packing the hubs completely full of grease you'll minimize water intrusion and render packing unnecessary. While bearing buddies are thought of as the cure, they won't help if you haven't filled the hub space. Pack the bearings, fill the hub with grease and install carefully- fill any remaining space and fill the buddy before installing. Then pump until the buddies move out as they are supposed to. Wipe any grease that escapes out the back and done- Hit the buddies with a shot or two each time out and you'll not have an issue.

"Pack the bearings, fill the hub with grease and install carefully- fill any remaining space and fill the buddy before installing."

is this the exact order to follow? pack=>fill hub=>install bearing=>install bb
