So every spring I spend two days buffing the fade and haze out of the gelcoat of my '74 sloop and apply a couple of coats of Penetrol, and every Fall at haul-out it's faded again. Time to paint.

I have used Interlux polyurethane (1 part) on smaller craft and it holds up pretty well, so rather than spend a fortune on Awlgrip, I'll probably go this route. I don't have the equipment or the desire to spray, so I'll probably use a roller. I'll be putting on bottom paint again as well. If anyone has any suggestions that might help, I'm all ears.

I have rolled and sprayed Interlux polyurethane. Take the time to sand real well and spray it. Rent the stuff if you have to. It dosent cost that much and it looks so much better. M

you sure don't have to spray interlux poly.. that's the beauty of it. use the roll & brush tipping method .. mix the paint with their 333 thinner , it's special cause it's slow to evaporate, mix it with the paint till you knock the heavy paint thickness out of it.don't be scared , it's not rocket science ,just not too watery .. you'll know when .... pour the mix in roller pan,, roll it on with a thin foam roller . do a section at a time, than tip ( go over ) with a good FLEXABLE natural brush dipped in a little 333 thinner as you go ..THAT'S THE TRICK .. just use the brush tip to knock flat the air bubbles. if the paint starts to pull stop : wet brush with more 333 . then roll cover another section an repeat. the beauty is you don't have to ( don't bother ) in trying to get it lookin' perfect,,,( cause it ain't gonna happen ) blending one done section with another .cause if you mess 'round to much you'll have a one '' PULLED PAINT MESS '' the secret is in the 333 thinner & the oil base paint .. takes along time to dry an gives it time blend together into a beautiful job.. IT takes 2 coats & takes the rite day also,, perfect spring weather an not windy.. comes out lookin' GRRREAT !! you can do it !! i did ...

Post your question to Len Staurt at WWW.AUTOBODYSTORE.COM Len is a painting guru and has given lots of tips on painting FG and even PWC. I believe you may be able to re-clear coat your boat. I have seen this done with a number of bassboats with good results.

BOB
