I am going to pull my lower unit this winter to do some repair and preventative maintenance. While I have it off I want to repaint it .<br />It is a Merc, so of course I want to paint it black. Does anyone know if Mercruiser sells a paint for lower units? Or is there a paint you would recommend?

I've simply used Rustoleum Gloss Black for years with good results..... Good results are all the preparation.

Okay, that sounds good to me. What do you do to prep? I am planning to wet sand, do you use a primer?

Elk Chaser: One more question - do you use a sealer or clear coat finish after painting?

Sailor, Use zinc chromate primer on the bare aluminum.

Sailor,if the current paint can be wet sanded to the primer and the primer is fine then just paint with merc. phantom black laquer and topcoat with clear depth coat and it WILL look new.If there are a few spots that really need to be sanded down to the metal then use zinc phosphate as first choice and zinc chromate as second choice.I have always used either mercruiser paint or Tempo paint with good results. If you are not keeping the boat in the water then any paint will probably do fine.Charlie

this may help, i've just painted my lower unit and i used all interlux spray products. including the zink cromate primer. the boat will be kept in the water 80% of the time. the only draw back was the bucks. it will equal the price of a new bottem job, which is next. my wife thinks that my moto is anything worth doing is worth over doing, she might be right.
