I made a cover for my battery and one for my trim pump, one on either side of the motor cover. I want to paint them white, the top edge is going to be capped with aluminum channel.

Is this an ok paint? Easypoxy Off-White, Quart - Pettit (Kop Coat) 3108QT - iboats

I have no plans to ever be on salt water.

If its not a good fit for this what would be?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Paint for new plywood

You can use the EasyPoxy but IMHO you could save a few bucks and still get a quality paint job. Rustoleum Professional Oil Based paint Or the Majic Paint from Tractor Supply is some really good paint for marine use. A good inexpensive Old School prep for sealing the edges and Flats of the plywood would be... Mix 1 cup of Boiled Linseed Oil, 2 cups of mineral spirits and one cup of polyurethane varnish in a plastic container. (Yields 1 quart of material) Saturate the plywood with this mixture paying close attention to the edges. Really pour it on and soak it in. Use the whole quart if you can. Wipe of any excess and let dry for a full 24 hours in direct sunlight and temps over 70?. Longer if temps are lower. Then Thin the first coat of paint using 30% Mineral Spirits and then apply 2-3 full coats of Rustoleum. It will last for as long as you own the boat. The Rustoleum paint runs about $15 a Quart. Primer is about the same. Boiled Linseed oil is $6 a quart and Poly Varnish is $10 a quart soooo for about $50 plus brushes and rollers you can "Git Er Dun". If you use the BLO sealer i described you don't even need the Primer.
EasyPoxy is about $49 a quart The Primer is about $26 Just another option to think about.

I totally agree with a good primer coat that is compatible with whatever topcoat you plan to use AND pay special attention to the edges, as this is where moisture will find its way in to the wood the easiest...you might also consider sealing/glueing the aluminum edging with a good Marine sealant to the edge of the wood...

Re: Paint for new plywood

If it's bare plywood, and you are not going for a super-fine finished surface, a couple of coats of Rustoleum oil based, applied directly to the plywood (no primer) works great. It will do fine for the edge application also, particularly if it's going to be capped.

I've used it like that for years on non-marine applications. When I started accessing this site I was happy to find it was the coating of (most) choice - kind of like finding an old friend.
