Paint instead of carpet?

I have removed the deck and all of the carpet in my 1985 16' Capri CC. I plan on recovering the deck with elephant bark. The interior of of the cuddy cabin and interior sides of the boat were covered in carpet. I am considering painting these areas with a metallic finish paint.
Has anyone done this?
Any advise on surface preparation and the best products to use?
Thanks.

Metallic eh ?.. you sure about that :)

I dont really know of any metallic paint that is brushable or rollable..

And Im sure you dont want to spray it..

I would go with a regular base color if I was you ( you may not have a choice ).

Awlgrip LP Might have a metallic that you can roll on but Im not 100% sure.

Re: Paint instead of carpet?

I just redid the carpeted hullsides on the ladies boat. I think you will find raw glass under the carpet. Mine was woven roven, hard to work with. I would think yours is a finer grade of mat, maybe a little easier. I had to fill the area with putty ...sand....fill....sand..etc...to get a non-gloosy gel-coat finish......Depends on the effort you are willing to put into it....The carpet is probably there for a reason. I think once you find what's ahead of you....you may change your mind. Courious......let me know what is under the carpet. Good Luck.

Under the carpet is fiberglass with old glue (from the carpet) over it.
I was hoping to paint over it as it is.

The old glue is best removed with a wire cup brush on an angle grinder and do not get too aggressive.

Depending on the budget........ look into Durabak coating which many members have used

Just a suggestion...

If your going to grind .. Please consider some earmuffs and Put some eyes on :) .

oh..and remove everything you dont want fiberglass on.

Why do you want to Paint inside your cabin instead of recarpet ?

Re: Paint instead of carpet?

I think it would be faster and easier.

CTS

It wont be faster or easier to prep and paint compaired to recarpet.

It would be more fun with carpet and 10 razors then to break out the Paint my friend :)

IMO.

Re: Paint instead of carpet?

Just a thought, I considered spraying a rubberized truck bed spray on the floor instead of carpet. I sprayed Herculiner in my truck bed and thought it would make a good alternative to carpet in a boat. It doesn't need as much prep work (hides a lot and is very thick), is easy to spray with the included gun and dries to a heavily pebbled rubber non-slip surface. I believe it also comes in different colors.
