so i decided i was gonna paint my starcraft gelcoat was long gone and it definately needed something so did all the prep work started shooting paint noticed when i got done all these little pinholes which are from the fiberglass or gelcoat being so old i can still see these pinholes. So i decided id try the tip/roll route so i can lay it on thicker so put a coat one it was basically a faded white this route seems better but its gonna take a few coats so i cant see any dark spots under still see pinholes a little will see what happens after it dries some

Re: paint job not turning out so well

toss up some pictures, someone will have sound advice if they can see what the pinholes look like...could be something as simple as air bubble due to wrong spray pressure..I had bad luck on my first 2 coats and ended up sanding it all off and starting over. Woodonglass has a good thread and page 10 has some good info on painting. I used roll and tip method myself and second try came out great! there is a definite learning curve, so I wish you luck and hope to see her shine!

Sounds like you are looking at fish eyes. Which is silicone still left on the surface that you are painting over. Depends on what type of paint you are using, but you used to be able to get fish eye remover and put it in the paint and it would bridge over the existing silicone. You may have to remove everything that you have put on so far, clean with laquer thinner and start over... Good luck, Bill

Blisters would be easily visible in the gel coat while sanding and before spraying, were these? If they are very small, close together and numerous, It may be porosity in the gel coat.

was the glass sanded first......then sealed off with gell paste?

csm will create pin holes if not prepped properly

yes i believe they are blisters sounds right and boat was sanded and all its a 58 so gelcoat is long gone and no gel paste i paid $350 bucks for the boat dont want to spend more on gelcoat stuff then the boat is worth

Re: paint job not turning out so well

Blisters can easily be seen, even at a slight distance, porosity can't (or rarely is), so if you need to get up close to see them it's more likely to be porosity. Without pics we are only going on your description though.

Ondarvr is correct .. its porosity ( we in the field pronounce it "perah****y" ).

A trained eye can see it in gelcoat but not all of it. Thats why we prime everything we spray.

You would have seen it clearly in the primecoat. Its then that you can skim coat the holes prior to spraying.

Only thing I could suggest is taking a pinpoint artist brush and dab the holes in with paint ( just small little dabbers ).

You could reprep and spray after that.

I know I know .. there could be hundreds of the little guys :( .

For me, It would really help alot if you would describe the entire prep process you followed to paint your hull. I just finsihed painting my 1961 hull and had none of the issue you are describing. Sounds like the prep was not done correctly.
