I am looking at a virtually new 1979 Sea Nymph 161fm with an evinrude 30 hp. I do know the original owner who says he has only used the boat a hand full of times and everything looks like it except when I pulled the motor cover off. It looks like the paint has come off of of the power head in places and the exposed cast aluminum has turned to a white powdery texture, is this normal or does this mean the motor was run extremely hot at one time causing the paint to fail? He says it has never run hot and he has always seemed like a very honest person. Please let me know your thoughts, he says it has the original prop on it and it does not even have the paint wore off and neither does the skeg. The boat has always been stored indoors since new would moisture from the garage cause this? This is my first post I hope someone can help.

it has run hot. he may not have known it. due to lack of use the impeller is probably shot. do a compression check. running hot is not necessarly fatal. post the results.

Re: Paint off of power head?

I did a compression check and both cylinders were 130 and it started right up. I went ahead and bought it and took it out this evening with no problems, it runs great. He had told me it was a 1978 but it is actually a 1987 which is good. I did notice that some of the paint loss was even on the very top of the flywheel which would have little to do with overheating I wouldn't think. Thanks very much for the reply.

I would be sure of the year of the motor so if you half to buy parts for it. Check this site and look your model number up to double check that year just click the top right hand link (model guide link). Although it could be a newer motor on a older boat nothing wrong with that, I would play it safe though for future reasons.

Service the water pump-NOW. Or, your next to new 1987 will be a heap of scrap.

Change the impeller immediately, before you burn it up. it's dried out and will leave you stranded, and with a motor to rebuild. it has gotten hot before, don't risk it again.

It might have had a mouse nest in it if it sat for a long time. Mouse pee is super corrosive in my experience and I've seen a few motors that looked like they were dunked in sea water from meese's.

the paint on mine is coming off but that only because some tard(me) got carb cleaner on it and didnt know it would F the paint.

Overheated paint will be discolored.
