Hello,

Well in my past hour or so of searching, i have had little luck in finding info on painting/gel-coating a fiberglass hull...it seems that the latter is more expensive, which may make it out of the question.

I'm sure there are many threads and/or links out there with plenty of info. If anyone can help guide me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

LOL......love the screen name.

welcome to iboats.

get a coffee......a snack......and click the link in my sig.

use the index for gellcoating a hull.

the only reason to re paint is if you dont like the color.

other than that...the gellcoat can be brought back to a shine very easily

I've seen that post before, forgot about it though, so thanks!

Quick question: Can a gel coat be applied with a roller/brush, or does it have to be sprayed on??

Thanks again,

yes...you can use a brush or roller....

in the UK.....you cannot spray at all....

the method of application is a wee bit different if you brush or roll it on....
if you choose this method....we can guide you

The more research i do, the more i am getting steered away from the roll and tip method, unfortunately, as I know NOTHING about spraying on anything!

This thread had the most info (besides the mega-thread) on the subject:

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=465692

Not sure what i'm gonna do now :(

I'm gunna chime in here. OOPS and Yacht Doctor are two of or resident pros and are very, very good at boat repair. Having said that, I will put my 2? in. Gelcoating the hull of a boat for an amatuer with out any experience in spraying or painting would be IMHO a very daunting task. Gelcoating requires proper equipment and the knowledge of how to use it in order to be successful. It requires minimal prep time but lots of sanding polishing and buffing. However, so does painting. Gelcoat is much more durable for boats and will stand up a lot better. Paint requires hours and hours of pre-Prep time and effort and then 20 minutes of paint time, if spraying, to paint the hull. Touch ups will be required throughout the seasons of use. You can easily Roll and tip a paint job on your boat but not so easily a Gelcoat surface. I will probably get some flak from OOPS and YD on this but like I said this is just MHO. It's your boat so you can do what you want.

forget roll and tip on gellcoat...

just roll it on....let semi cure.....roll more on.....let semi cure and do it again...

then just sand it to a shine.

spraying is really the best......even if you go rent an airless sprayer form a rent shop....(buy the insurance) and then run acetone thru it when finished each section, or when it starts to gell in the bucket.

it is not that hard to do......but even is the key....
even a first timer can get moderate to good results with basic equipment.

but ill tell you what......post some pics.....lets look at this puppy...we can guide you from there

It depends on what paint you want to use ;) .. Paint can get VERY expensive with its primers and abrasives needed to apply it. And in the end there is no Guarantee your gonna get a pro job out of the product.

The more research i do, the more i am getting steered away from the roll and tip method, unfortunately, as I know NOTHING about spraying on anything!

Then Dont Spray. In fact I would steer away from rolling and tipping paint ( You know Nothing about that either ). Brushing might be up your alley though..

I will put my 2? in. Gelcoating the hull of a boat for an amatuer with out any experience in spraying or painting would be IMHO a very daunting task. Nope..You expressed my feelings perfectly .. no Flak here :D .

Thanks guys!

Just so you know .. Paint is less forgiving in the Finishing Stage apposed to Gelcoat. Gelcoat is more forgiving in the Finishing Stage(s) and application. ( Pot life of gel coat is a serious problem and the ONLY reason why people tend to stay away from it. .. If Gel had a pot life of 4 hours after mixing you would see more Gel Jobs being done compared to Paint jobs )

YD.
