ok guys this is a hugeee step for me!!!im getting ready to paint my 20 ft wellcraft, im painting the inside white and the outside navy blue. So i have chosen interlux brightside paint and i hear people have great results with this. So my question is how do i get a great finish??? i have sanded down the inside and outside of the boat, (note: not completly, but enough to where you can see the firgerglass and the paint has something to bite on) so i figure now i am going to use the interlux primer???? and i have talked to a few people around here and they say you have to "thin" the coats of paint so its real thin when you put it on the hull so it dosent leave brush marks, is this true? if this is true, what kind of thinner do i use? and how many coats have you put on to get a good finish???? last but not least!! i am painting a hull that is 20 ft long by 8ft wide, how much paint should i buy for the hull??? thanks so much guys!! im going to be posting pics here soon i apprecate all of your inputs.  :)

Re: PAINT paint paint questionssss

jserb,

Interlux's website has videos detailing the step by step how to process for getting that mirror like finish. You can also request a copy of them on cd from their website. They are very detailed and give all of the item numbers for primer, thinner, fiberglass wash, masking tapes, etc. They weren't real helpful in figuring the amount needed for my 21 footer. I sent them an e-mail with a pic and dimensions and they just responded with a "Here's what it covers, you figure it out". All of the spec's for coverage are on the website. Make sure you post some pics of the finished project. I'll be doing mine with Interlux Perfection as soon as spring arrives. Good luck,

Here's the link to the video's.

Interlux Yacht Paint

I use a foam roller and foam brushes. thin it out about 10% or more depending on the temperature and roll out about a square foot or so and then brush back off most of it. work from dry back onto wet to keep your edge wet, and more thin coats will smoother than a few thick ones.

if you sanded down to the glass fibers, you will have to prime it, if its gelcoat, just rough it up a little with some 280 and lay it on.
