I have been working on my 15' v-hull for awhile in terms of paint. I used Benjamin Moore industrial paint on a few areas inside the boat, it looked great. A couple days later I went back out and it had wrinkled all over the place. I sanded down what I had painted to start over.

I went and got some Pettit EasyPoxy primer (undercote) and preped the surface by lightly sanding it and then I mixed amonia and water together as Pettit tells you to, and cleaned the surface.

It also wrinkled the next day. I sanded down the wrinkles and applied another cote, which was slightly better but not by much- it too is wrinkling in a lot of areas. In these areas I can take my fingernail and remote the paint down to the previous surface.

I am doing very light coats, my temp is about 50-55 degrees in the garage.

Please let me know what I am doing wrong, thanks a lot.

By the way some of this paint isnt over bare epoxy it is over a year old paint job and there doesnt seem to be any reason as to which surface has the problem, they both are equally problematic.

Thank you.
-John

hmm, amonia and water? thats a new one to me and i've been painting cars and boats for 25 yrs.. not that it doesn't work, i've just never heard of it and it sounds a little strange...

best paint prep dewaxer/degreaser is denatured alcohol. period. end of story...

Prepsol, Final Wash, etc and all these other products pale in comparison IMO and sometimes can cause probs.

sounds like either a cringing condition, where the solvent from your paint is lifting the edges of feathered material below it... or a reaction to the whole surface from the amonia or something..

what grit is it sanded with?

It is sanded with 150 grit.

The amonia and water is straight from the back of the can of Pettit, ive never heard of it either.

I am wondering if my shop is too cold, it is I think 50-55 degrees.

Thanks for the reply.

what it sounds like to me is that you have moisture comming to the surface causing the paint to release from the surface bonding it. is it wood you are painting over? no matter what type prep work is done if moisture is present then the paint will lift. Good luck

well, 50 is borderline temp for sure.. but i've never had paint react like that from cold. just dries super slow usually.. but it is feasable, can't say i've used either of those products.

anyway you can preheat the shop to warm the substrate up some? run a rented torpedo heater or something all morn, shutdown and paint in the afternoon?

shouldn't be having any bonding issues with 150 grit, thats for sure... i have seen peeps have adhesion probs with finely sanded epoxies, etc, thats why i asked...

Because it keeps doing it over and over, It could be that the paint has reached its shelf life.

I have had paint peel up like that before. It was caused from spraying a liquor base paint over a thinner base paint. it was lifting the top layer off and would not stick.

It sounds to me like the Benajamin Moore paint is having problems adhering to the original surface, and what ever you put on top of it keeps causing it to react by lifting. You may have to remove the Benjamin Moore paint totally before anything will be able to give you the results you are looking for.
I had a similar experience with some generic spray paint over a plastic computer case. I had originally wiped it with alcohol and then sanded with 150 grit to get some bite. It wrinkled all over the place after the the second light mist cote was applied. I sanded again to remove the wrinkles, wiped with alcohol and then applied a primer. when I applied a quality paint, it caused the wrinkles to come back again. I ended up sanding back to bare plastic and starting all over again, and the wrinkles did not rear their ugly head any more.

Most paint problems are surface preparation related. You may have to strip itright down to bare substrate- and that either means hours of scrapping and sanding, or using a chemical stripper. There are several of the new generation strippers out now that are non toxic and biodegradable- very safe to use, no fumes and you don;t even need gloves[ they don;t burn skin].Check out
www.napierenvironmental.com for their productline- I believe Pettit is a marine distributor for the company as well
