Hi everyone!

Im finally ready to paint my boat. Got it flipped over and everything is straight! =)
Anyways, went to the local WestMarina and the guy told me that 2 coats of the Brightside top paint is the best to use on my boat. The only time the boat will be in the water is when im using it, other than that it will be in my back yard on the trailer.
Is it okay to use the top paint? or was I misinformed? Is there a better paint to use?

also what is the recoat time on the paint without sanding? and should I use primer?

Thanks guys.

Is it in fiberglass or aluminum? If it's bare aluminum you need to vinegar wash and zinc chromate prime.

Yes topcoat brightside is fine I have it on my 14' aluminum starcraft. It will take 2 coats and sanding not required between coats. The first coat will not fully cover and the 2nd will do the trick. Let the first coat dry for a day before the 2nd coat.

Thanks Bob!
My boat is fiberglass, what should i use to clean and prep before I paint? acetone? degreaser?
Do you think its a good idea to just scuff (w/ 220grit) and paint without primer? I really don't mind taking the extra step and primering the whole thing (since the boat is upside down and I have time to do it). What do you think?

Should I clean the surface with something when im ready to apply the second coat?
Oh and last, could I put on 3+ coats.. since I have plenty of paint? (& just because I have this stupid idea that more is better)

WOW lots of questions, I know haha...
Thank you very VERY much.

I think that 220 would be okay and wipe it down after with rags maybe even a bit of acetone to remove the dust and anything left.

2 coats will be fine and if you have a spot that needs a 3rd you will see it. Just take your time and the paint smooths out very nicely. I hav a few spots I touched up as needed.

After the brightside is fully dried (cured) and you give it about two weeks ..... you should be able to apply a piece of duct tape and it will not pull off the paint from the surface.

ToyBoat, Acetone is a good final cleaner, but it doesn't do a real good job of removing wax. Sometimes you will even find the bottom of a boat has been waxed. I would wipe it down with paint thinner or Prep-Sol (if you can get it) both before & after sanding - that way you will be sure any residual wax or grease is gone. Then use the acetone or a tack rag to clean up the last of the dust before putting on the paint. Hope this helps.

wow two weeks for it to cure? that means that I can't flip it over untill it's completely dry right?

what do you guys suggest on the primer? should I just do it and stop being lazy...

The guy at the boat shop told me to roll and tip, but I see that most people use a spounge brush to "tip". The guy sold me a 3" brissle brush to tip it. Should I return it and buy a spounge one? or will both work the same?

Thanks for all the help.

A few thing's i can share about Bright Sides, it will produce result's that extrodinary, but in painting your boat think of it as painting a glass mirror any imperfections on the glass will show greatly.

Fisrt id wash down the boat with comet first, secondly a good dish soap followed by a very liberal wipe using laquer thinner. It is very important to eliminate any wax, oil, etc, residue from the boat.

Sanding down the old outer coat can be done with 80 grit, pay very close attetion to any small ding's id also do it by hand, using 80 it will not take that much longer.

After cutiing off the top of the old gel, get yourself some interlux fairing putty to smooth out any little imperfection's use it in very small amounts, that stuff really sets up fast so know ahead of time what you going to fair

Putting a base coat's is in my opinion nessecary, you might very well end up doing 2-4 base coat's, again lightly hand sand using 220 grit, What your looking for is almost a semi glass like look from your primer after sanding it will take on a almost light purple hue. The primer is very light paint dont let it distress you if you sand though it hence the 2-4 coat's

I cannot stress how important it is to due the above prep step's it's actually 90% of the job

As to the final painting i had 80 degree weather with little humidity, I thinned down the paint using Interlux 333,what worked the best in that case was 4 oz of 333 to 16 oz of paint or about 20%. The first coat was very light surfaced dried in about 1 hour, its not gonna look that great but dont let that worry you. This time i used 440 grit and again lightly sanded the next day and repainted,

On the area's that i had prepped properly (flat and smooth as glass) the result's were to me were stunning, No one could have told me a amature could produce a paint job that looked that great. Unfortunatley it was so good i had to go back and take out all of the imperfections that i had negelected to do the first time

The actual painting only take's a very small amout of time...........had i spent more time on the prep i could post some very nice results............. here's a shot that was done correctly

To the sprayer issue, i will be the first to admit that a true quality sprayer is probably desired and they do have them @ harbor (see bond-o for suggestions) I used a wagner which barely atomized the paint enough to level, and the sprayer was supposedly rated to shoot a polyurethane paint. With that said bright sides has a incredible ability to level so give it a try if you wish

If you prime use a dark based primer, it will allow you to see how uniform you are applying the paint (white on white is a tough one) i guess last i also used acetone to clean the boat before each paint application ...good luck

Ive seen that one.........look's pretty slick, it should lay out a nice mist and the paint will level itself
