When i apply the epoxy primer to my 12' fiberglass tri hull what type of paint can i get away with using as a topcoat? i do not need antifouling paint. What is the cheapest type of paint i can use and still make it look decent?

Re: Paint question

Be certain to read the label. "most" epoxy primer's need to be top coated within 24 hours or the top coat may not properly adhere.

Re: Paint question

Not knowing your project.

Do you need a primer?

Two part epoxy primer and then cheap paint?

Most paints don't need a primer when bonding to gel coat, a sanding primer does help to hide all of the minor defects in the surface though.

There are lots of choices on a low cost easy to apply paint for a 12' FG boat that don't involve a pricy primer.

Well i've already bought the primer. its an older boat thats bare fiber glass and has been sitting in the elements for a while so i wanted to make sure it at least had a good primer seal. It does say to topcoat it while its tacky. I'm not neccassarily looking for a cheap top coat i just wanna know if i can use something they sale at lowes or home depot instead of waiting another week by ordering a top coat online.

NEW NAUTICAL COATINGS, INC. 14805 49th Street North ? Clearwater, FL 33762 ? 800.528.0997 ? 727.523.8053 ? FAX 727.523.7325

They have an 800 number. Call them and ask them about using Rustoleum Premium Industrial Oil based paint.

Sold @ Lowes. Less than $30 for a Gallon. Lot's of guys on here use it on their boats. If they say YES then I'd go for it.

Re: Paint question

Sea Hawk "tuff stuff" two part epoxy primer.

Tuff stuff is sold mainly for a bottom "barrier" system..

That stuff goes on like melted marshmellows..so warning to ya. ( thin it ).

Im a certified applicator for Sea Hawk.

Im sure your going to end up sanding it before the topcoat.

Thank you for the heads up! Since you are certified i can ask you... because their offices are closed. Will using that oil-based rustoleum enamel have any repercussions?

Re: Paint question

I have no idea... Never used rustoleum before..

Bond-o would be more able to help.

I can tell you this though..you will not be able to topcoat without sanding first.

Kinda frustrating when peeps ask for help ..then in the end the response is " thanks anyways..ill post pics when im done " kinda thing.

My apologiez! i thought when i said "I'll let you know how it goes" it was kind of implied that i would be using the Rusto-o. I applied two coats of the Primer it went on fairly well without thinning it. Although i was only able to cover "below the water-line". I will apply the Rusto-o tomorrow after a lil scuff scuff with the sand paper! So stay tuned!

I am attaching pics of when i first started sanding and then the coats of primer.
