Paint questions

I'm thinking about repainting the boat since the gelcoat is heavily scratched, faded, and worn. I am going to have to roll-n-tip it as I have no way to spray. I'm also going to have to do it as it sits on the trailer since I am very limited in space in the garage (can't keep anything outside; stupid HOA and a lady across the street that will call if my kids drop their bike for even 5 minutes).

Anyway, my wife really wants the metal flake look. Is there a way to achieve this using paint and the roll-n-tip method? Suggestions?

Oh, and this would be top-side only. I am probably just going to touch-up the bottom with a gel coat kit since I can't get it off the bunks.

Thanks Scott. I actually painted the last boat I restored (a couple of years back) based on WoG's guide. I'm no stranger to painting the boat. I'm a stranger to rolling it, though (I sprayed last time because I had the space and capacity... and the boat off the trailer). After further research, it looks like I won't be able to roll metal flake either.

no, you can not roll metal flake. it is actually a biotch to spray as well. I used to have an agitator gun just for metalics and metal flake.

I'll have to tell the wife tough, then. She told me I couldn't spray so she's stuck with a solid color. :)

A little too expensive for what it is. The boat is an '89 Skeeter bass-boat. I can paint the entire top cap for $100 or less. I'm fine without metal flake and the wife will just have to be as well.
