paint sprayers

Hello, I'd like to get a paint sprayer for odd jobs around here. I see a lot of sprayers that are of a syphon type and then I see the Hi Volume Low Pressure Type. I'd like to be able to spray paints and perhaps varnishes with it. I'm not getting into any automotive painting although I may spray my beater with Rustoleum if I get the urge. I just need a reliable utility sprayer because spray cans just don't cut it.
Do I need to spend a lot? Do the type sold at Home Depot etc. work alright? I'm particularily interested in HVLP (I mean the type that use compressed air not a dedicated blower) , any special considerations here? I have a large air compressor w/100% duty cycle and I think it's up to task, or is it? It's the cast iron belt type vertical but I don't have the specs in front of me.
Thanks, Be careful today Friday Aug. 13th!

First of all i think you are confused about guns. I think what you are saying is you don't want the Wagner type electric. Someone will explain the HVLP (High Vol.Low Pressure) i'm sure. But anyways here is what I used for years with suprisingly great results. I bought a cheapy high pressure gun from Harbor Freight Tools for spraying primer, it worked so well I used it for top coats and even had people hire me to paint vehicles for them and did it with a 2 1/2 hp compressor.

No, I definately wouldn't go near an electric sprayer. But there are HVLP sprayers that use a separate blower and large diameter hose for air pressure or volume and they sound like a vaccum cleaner. I don't want one of those either though they are nice. I've seen supposed HVLP guns that connect to an air compressor but I've never heard of how well they perform.

Re: paint sprayers

Home Depot sells a nice little HVLP gun for $80. Is is nice gun for what your talking about. The differences between it and $500+ guns are these: The $80 gun does not atomize paint as finely as the more expensive ones, therefore it does not lay down as uniform a coat, and runs are easier to get. Second, the cheaper gun might spray a nice 5" to 8" fan shapped pattern of material, whereas the expensive gun will spray a 12" to 18" wide pattern with no burps, spits or other unpleasant alterations to your new finish. If you paint cars for a living, the wider fan angle translates to fewer passes to cover the vehicle, and reduced paint consumption; features usefull to someone in the business. For what you want to do, the $80. gun should work just fine.

CalicoKid
Hadn't noticed it was Friday the 13th! Maybe I shouldn't post! :)

I hope I'm not mudding the water here.
I have HVLP (Campbell Hausfeld) $150.00 that works well for painting/staining the house etc
Stand alone unit, big hose etc and Hums like a vacuum cleaner. Works great. Pain in the arzz to clean!

What your looking for is I think, just a good ole spray gun. Hook up to compressor and go for it.
I would go for a medium to high end HVLP gun. A brand name that you will able to get parts and different nozzels for, five-ten years from now.

I priced some 4 years ago and for 150.00 or less there were several brands out there. The only reason I said HVLP is because in our state just to rent a spray booth your gun has to be HVLP.
Since I'm going to buy one in the near futher I'm going to follow your post to see what advice you get on brands etc myself.

You can get the really good, high-end CH HVLP units on eBay for like 50% off. I've been eying a few of them. I bought one of the CH pressure washers off one of the powersellers for less and 50% of retail.

Thanks for the inputs. I think I'll look around ebay a little. I hadn't thought about servicability, good tip. Doesn't sound like I need to mortgage the house to get decent results either, thanks alot!

Re: paint sprayers

Yeah those are nice results! I just brought home a sprayer that a friend had unused for ten bucks. It's a Husky, I think that's a home depot brand, I'll have to check and see If I can get different nozzles for it there. I'm sure it's not HVLP but, ten bucks! I'll probably try my hand at spraying some primer at the old car, can't screw that up too bad..

Does anyone know if a Devillebiss is a good sprayer?

I've been eyeing a Devillbiss Finish line II. I have sprayed a boat, three boat trailers,a nd a large wooden swingset with my $20 Harbor Freight suction gun and have gotten decent results. The only time I struggled was trying to shoot the boat, the compressor had to work hard to keep up. The compressor is a 5hp, 29 gal, direct drive Coleman. This winter, I want to try painting my work truck, so I think the gravity feed may work better for that, and since I seem to paint quite a bit, a good gun may not be a bad investment.

Re: paint sprayers

The reason I ask is I found an old Devillebiss gun laying in my sisters shop.....she says I can have it and I was wondering if it was worth the trouble of bringing back to life. It appears to be clean. I'm going to hook some air to it and shoot some thinner through it and see what it does. If it does it ok the I'll try shooting some primer through it on an old metal chair.

Re: paint sprayers

Boy did I open a can of worms! I ended up cleaning up the old car and primering it and painting it! It took only a short time to figure out the gun's quirks and how to read the paint for the right viscosity and I was off and running! I'll probably need to rub it out though, it's curing right now. I can definately see the benefits of a nicer gun now. I'd like to lay down paint in a swath about a foot wide at a time. But for now this $10 sprayer will do fine.

Jason B, I bought a DeVillbis HVLP Finishline III, on Ebay. It came with all the nozzles sizes. I painted my son's Pontiac Sunbird, in the garage. I was amazed at the low level of overspray. I didn't even have to clean the body of the gun off, when I was done. When I've used my syphon gun, there would be overspray everywhere and the gun would be covered as well.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4311256317&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT
