Hi,
I have a Yamaha black steel series prop on my Yamaha F115 4-stroke. Where I use my boat it is rather shallow and we have sand banks that move around and sometimes you hit the prop in one of those sand banks. I did hit one of those sand banks this summer. All went well and nothing happen except my prop now is almost more metal color then orginal black color on the blades. I noticed some days ago that the blades has started to rust despite the prop is staninless steel.

So I think it is best to get the prop painted at least to prevent the rust.

What is the best and most durable paint to use?
2-component epoxy paint (sprayed)?
Must the prop be balanced after the new paint?

It is this Yamaha black steel series prop I have:
You can spend a bunch on paint, but it'll get damaged again sooner or later. A can of spray paint is cheap, and you can paint one prop a few times with just one can. I wouldn't get the cheapest brand, but I wouldn't worry much about it if that was all that was on the shelf that day either. Look for a satin finish paint, not gloss or flat.

It not Stainless if it rust. This is a cheap steel prop painted black to save money in getting stuff out the showroom in my book. Use it up and get a aluminum one, or a real Stainless if you run into sand banks a lot

Some stainless steel will rust to a certain extent, but not as fast as regular steel. It all depends on the grade of stainless.

Black Steel is not Stainless Steel, it is black steel.

Hi,
Thanks for the answers!
It is obviously not stainless steel. I will let a "propshop" take care of the prop and let them give it suitable treatment/paint.
/Bo

I agree with Jack Shellac. Stainless doesn't mean without stain it means it will stain less. I've had a couple high dollar stainless rifles that would get orange spots if carried in the rain.

I have Mercury Brand 141/2 X 17 stainless steel cupped prop and it gets a little rust inside the cupped area, It cleans itself up after a couple hours of running. It is not a highly polished prop like some are today.
