Ok ; here we go again with another question about paint; actually three questions
what I what is the absolute best paint for my 18?SS . I am painting both top and bottom(exterior) I am also going to paint the inside of the hull and at this point am not sure what to use on it. I don?t want to use carpet; I want the ease of cleaning a non carpeted surface; easy cleanup after fishing (blood & guts) etc? so, I want the best non skid stuff for the inside and the best shinny, flexible, longest wearing paint for the outside. Yeah I know; million dollar questions. Never the less I need your expert, experienced, advice. Like I?ve said in other post; I intend on refitting the SS once, and doing it proper. Again I appreciate all suggestions. Thank you in advance;

Re: Paint;

"Best paint' is subjective!

For me, Awlgrip, Imron, Dupont Centauri
Someday I'll try gel coat.

I like Dupont Centauri for price and durability.

As for the interior paint...(I hate carpet on a boat)...see above!

For anti-skid, a few companies make rubberized/textured additives.

Check out the thread below with 30 posts. Hope some of that answers your questions. Seems we don't have to spend a bunch of cash unless we want to.

Re: Paint;

ok; I am going to go with this stuff. Supermarine Urethane (SM-266) rests alone atop the marine paint performance pyramid. A high solid two-component acrylic urethane specifically formulated to provide superior performance in heavy-duty applications in the harshest environments. Provides superior color and gloss retention while withstanding corrosive chemicals, heat to 500F, high impacts, abrasions and long term submersion. Guaranteed to withstand spilled fuel or battery acid for 7 days with little or no effect!
its pricy but from what i have been told, it may be the best stuff going. I will find out if its all true.
thanks all

Wow Max that looks like the real good stuff! It had better be for the price. Let us know how it works out for you.

Re: Paint;

Personaly I believe awlgrip to be the highest quality paint system available (although this is a very subjective thread). It is the #1 choice in the yacht industry and is a proven high quality durable finish. It can be difficult to apply because the temperature of the paint and the temperature of the surface to be painted is critical, but they do provide very detailed application instructions. Its supposed to be for professional use only but it is available at places like jamestown distributors.

I havn't used the supermarine stuff but it seems to be a quality paint system and it is cheaper than awlgrip.

good luck, we need to see pictures of this paint job!

Re: Paint;

I'm sure it will be a very good paint to use but be extremely careful spraying it.I used a polyurethane paint on mine and even with a poly rated cartridge on my mask this stuff liked to have killed me.I was sick as h e double tooth picks for days.The thinners are what got me.If you can, get a pressurized suit to prevent this.I'm serious.Anyway good luck with it and let us know how it goes.

Re: Paint;

I used Petit and Interlux for my paint project. Petit for bottom paint, Interlux for the primer and finished product. Excellent self leveling and a gorgeous finish even with a foam roller and paint brush.

The sanding and prep work before and after primer is where the job gets the "best" results. I even wet sanded the finish coat once.
