I have an older boat that the previous owner kept in water seasonally so he painted the bottom with bottom paint. I trailer it to the river now but the bottom is lookin pretty shabby. I want to paint at least the bottom but can I use regular boat paint or do I have to use bottom paint? Thanks for the info...you guys are a wealth of useful information:)

Re: paint

below the waterline you need to use bottom paint; topside paint will blister and flake off (not provide any protection). Depending on the type of paint that is on there now you have quite a few options. If you're working with a trailerable boat I would look at using a hard (modified epoxy) type paint so it does not wear off while loading and unloading. There are quite a few brands out there; once you decide on one, follow the recommended procedures for prepping the surface and application. It's a pretty simple thing but can be a little dirty/messy. Please be sure to wear proper protective equipment (tyvek suit, respirator, gloves, etc) and lay down a plastic tarp to catch the flakes... Hope this helps!
