im getting ready to paint my project. its a 1976 checkmate vmate 1. i spoke to an old man that told me to u resin with a universal color paint. he told me to mix the the color with the resin then put in hardner and spray it on with a gun. this is something im contemplating this idea instead of a urethane with hardner. the old man told me that using the resin and color i wouldnt have to use primer an it would never lose its shine. does anyone have any ideas on this or have an other idea for me im wanting to keep it as cheap as possible im trying this by myself for the first time.

Resin with color is called gelcoat....which many have done here....I would just paint it. Painting is much easier and quicker.

Aa far as "never' loose it's shine.....I don't know of anything that will do that.

Re: Paint????

Here's My recommendation. Sand her down with 180 grit. Use 3M Premium Filler to fill any gouges. (clean em with Acetone first) Prime With Rustoleum Oil Based Primer. The Paint with Rustoleum Professional High Gloss Oil Based Paint. Use this formula.

1 qt paint, 1/2 cup Acetone, 2oz of Valspar Acrylic Enamel Hardener.

Spray with a HVLP gun with a 1.8mm tip Or use a Foam Roller to roll it on and the Re-Roll it with a Roller with almost NO paint on it. Two coats and It'll look great. Tractor Supply Co. carries the Valspar Hardener, Lowe's and Home Depot carry the Rustoleum Paint. Two Quarts should be plenty. Harbor Freight Sells a HVLP gun for less than $50 bucks. You'll need a 60 gallon compressor to run it though.

Will it give a good finish or will it look like a cheap paint job?

Re: Paint????

People have great success with the Rustoleum Paint. Just look around the resto threads u'll find tons of pics and you can be the judge for yourself. IMO with the proper application and prep you can't tell a difference.... I went the expensive route with house of kolor paints but I admire many boats on here daily that are Rustoleum Beauties!

Re: Paint????

I'm goin try this still a few questions. do I need to put anything in with the primer? And how long should I let primer dry? Also should I let paint dry in-between coats or just let first coat get tacky then apply second coat?

Re: Paint????

Here's How I recommend Prepping and shooting Rustoleum.

Lightly Sand the hull with 180 grit. Wipe down with acetone. Thin 1 Qt Rustoleum Oil Based Primer with 1 1/2 cups of Acetone. Shoot it with a HVLP spray gun with 1.8mm tip. Let dry 4-6 hours. Wet Sand with Scotchbrite Pad. Dry wipe down with Mineral Spirits. Shoot another coat. Repeat Wet sanding and prep. Mix 1 qt Rustoleum Oil Based Paint with 1 1/2 cups Acetone and 2oz of Valspar Acrylic Enamel Hardener. MIX WELL!!! Filter and Pour in Paint Gun. Shoot and let dry 6-8 hours. Shoot first coat in the early morning Shoot second coat in evening. Want temp's to be in the 70's to low 80's. 1 Qt will give you about two light coats. Don't mix more than you will use due to the hardener. I recommend 3-4 light coats. No clear coat needed. It will SHINE like a new penney. Dry hard as nails. 72 hours and she'll be cured. Or you can use the Roll n' Roll method as well. Roll it on and when the paint is completely gone out of the roller go back over what you just painted to roll out the bubbles. Do it in the SHADE NOT in direct sunlight. Use the ULTRA fine Foam rollers

Also I bought high gloss oil based paint. But the guy at the store told me that it is not good below water level is the hardner going to make it ok under the water line?

Yep, as long as you don't leave it in for more than a few days. Prolly good for up to a week. Make sure to let it cure for a MINIMUM of 72hrs before putting her back on the trailer.;)

Mix 1 qt Rustoleum Oil Based Paint with 1 1/2 cups Acetone and 2oz of Valspar Acrylic Enamel Hardener.

Woodon, would we use the same mixture for a roll-n-roll application? And if we have Penetrol for thinner, should we still use the same amount as we would have with Acetone? Would higher temps (low to mid-90s) require more or less thinner, or not recommended at all? Only time to paint in 70s/80s in Louisiana is at midnight!

These questions seems relevant to the discussion and may be of help (to more people than myself!)... :D

If you want to use Penetrol then I'd go 3/4 cup of it and 3/4 cup of Acetone. Everything else the same. Roll n' Roll or Spray NO DIFFERENCE!!!

Temps are TOUGH. With the Hardener it Really makes the Paint Flash pretty quick. I have NOT TRIED this so can't speak for certain but... if you substituted Mineral Spirits for the Acetone it might slow the Dry time down enough for higher temps, but it will also probably affect the drying times too! Just not sure. If you're gunna paint in the summer time I guess you're gunna have to stay up LATE!!!
