what is a recommended paint for painting over glass? I'm carpeting over it but I was going to paint it first, do you think it's overkill to do this?

I have painted over many different surfaces with most of that being metals. I did paint my OB and it had a glass cowling and I used regular automotive catalyzed acetylic enamel paints from PPG. But I never painted as an expert and therefore will only explain what I did as an amateur painter that has had some very nice success. I started out with bare fiberglass and sanded that surface with 600 grit wet and dry. Then I sprayed PPG K36 primer, even a few coats. Then I block sanded that with 600 again until I was pleased with the looks. And this is a great place to say that any paint job finish is always done in the prep work. Don't think that top coat will cover up any imperfections in the primer work. Once I had the primer work finished to my liking, I sprayed a few coats of the actual top coat using again PPG automotive paints with hardener. After that dried/cured, I topped that off with a few coats of PPG clear coats. I think it came out looking very nice. And all the colors and art work designs are paint. Not any decals either. So that is my painting ability and sequence. There are so many others that have come out extremely nice and they will chime in as well... So many ways to accomplish the result YOU want...

Uhhmmm, I assume you mean fiberglass. Are you going to Glue the carpet down. If so I wouldn't paint it. If you're Not going to glue it then Painting would be ok. I think a more detailed description of what you are doing etc... would help us to give you better advice.

sorry for being vague, I'm talking about the deck and rear transom seats. they all are carpeted( or will be) I was going to use 3M spray glue then lay the carpet. just wondering if I should paint it first. but you've answered that for me.

I personally wouldn't paint what I am going to cover in carpet. To great a chance the paint will let lose. You know the glass shouldn't. Just an opinion.

the new deck and all the seat boxes are done with polyester polymer. when the rear seat cushions are off to access the battery and a storage compartment the openings will be uncarpeted so I was going to paint that area light grey to try and match the gel coat in the splash well.

If you have not used epoxy gel coat and a roller or brush is an option. Sand with 40 or 80 on a da and go to town. Or any good enamel should work. Sand well Clean with acetone. Paint away.

Don't paint under the carpet, it will take time and money and will be far more likely to fail than without it.

I agree ^^^ If you've Poly'd the deck and are going to carpet just leave it. Exposed areas would be a good candidate for gelcoat.
