Hello

Any techniques to making an old motor cover (well cover is probably not the best word I mean the thing the cover goes on, the metal that fits over the whole shebang. hood?, casing?, top?, enclosure?, what is it called anyway?) look original and new? I suppose you sand and paint it like an auto body but what about the decals or painted on names. I would really like to see
some project pics of such an undertaking.
My 1957 18 HP Johnson seahorse was sprayed over somewhat, probably many years ago and yet some of the writing still shows through. I would really want to paint it original but am not even sure what colour it was. Is there a way to find these things out .

Thanks

Re: painted motor

You need paint:

nymarine.ca

And decals:

americanoutboard.com/decals/

Don't bother trying to strip the original paint, just scuff it up with ~220 grit so the new paint can adhear to freshly exposed, dull paint. You will not be able to replicate anything nearly as good as the original paint for a base. Any areas of bare metal will need to be sanded bright, washed with a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water, and primed with a zinc chromate or zinc phosphate primer.

Preparation and cleanliness are the keys to a sucessful job.
