I used a quart of epoxy PrimeKote from Interlux tonight. Had to compliment the product, it worked great, and I'm totally pumped to be this far. For those of you just getting started, keep going, getting things painted is a blast.

Check out the bilge after two coats (before picture included just to make you go "yuk").

Looks great. Your post is like an ad for facial cream or something though where the before picture shows a sad woman with no make up and then the after..... :)

Dan,
That looks outstanding. I can't say how much of an inspiration your project has been for me. Hell, I even setup a blog for my similar ransom/stringer rot repair project:

Thanks Dan! Keep it up, you're almost there!

Nick - those pictures look familiar, man. One suggestion - use a sawzall instead of the pry bar and cut your battery trays and foam boxes off with it. The crowbar is futile against rotten trays and floor.

I cut one off at a time and rebuilt so I wouldn't have to remember or write down any measurements, and would have a place to sit. :)

Great start!!

Hey you used prime coat not bilge coat?

I though prime coat was a primer.

huh, I never thought about using it.

I just bought some bilge coat the other day so that's why I'm asking.

Dan,
I must say, I think the rot issues we have must be worse that what you had to deal with. If the weather clears this weekend I'm going to get really into removing the rotten wood. So far, a lot of it has just fallen away after cracking the thick coat of paint on the inside portion of the transom. As far as the battery trays go, there really wasn't much wood left after I pulled the carpet away.

Your advice has been priceless thus far though, so when I get back in the boat I'll bust out the sawzall for sure. I also have a pneumatic cut away, it might help out with the more precise cuts. Sometimes those sawzalls can be a bit greedy when cutting.

Thanks Dan!

One more thing, at this point the severe wood rot is making things easier as far as removal of "wood" -- more like sweeping kindling out.

Thanks again Dan. I look forward to seeing some more photos of your project. It is looking very nice, and right on time.

I used super fast hardening epoxy resin, so there was quite a bit of blush on the surface. With the waxy crap being an issue and cleaning/sanding unlikely to get to all of it, Interlux recommends the use of PrimeKote after cleaning and sanding before laying down the BilgeKote to prevent bubbles and ensure good adhesion.

Here's a pic of the first coat of BilgeKote (grey).

Thanks for the compliments!

Looking at your pictures I think they're almost identical.

A huge time-suck on these projects is diddling around with wood removal. My port tray, stringers and engine mounts took two weeks to remove as I peeled layers back not knowing what I was getting into and fiddled with foam removal and other crap. The starboard side took 1 hour.

I planned my cuts so I only had to cut once. I didn't bother with getting foam out - just cut the whole tray and stringer assembly out and lifted the foam out with it, ground down with a 30 grit disc on a grinder, cleaned up and started rebuilding!

I hear you on the sawzall. I had at least two "OH %@#!@" moments thinking I'd cut through the hull, but got lucky. Short wood blades on a sawzall help alleviate somewhat the "oops I just created a new drain slot in the hull" situation. Plus, you don't need to cut close to the floor, wait until all that's left are stubs, then cut them out last.

Note taken. I feel like we've digressed from the main topic of this posting but I do appreciate your advice. The weather guy said tomorrow should be nice so I'm going to get some sleep and get ready for tomorrow. I hope to have more progress/photos to share soon.

Woohoo! It friggin RUNS!!

Woohoo! It friggin RUNS!!

After finding out it was super rotten, replacing just about everything wood in the engine compartment, fixing everything else, reading the service manual in bed at night, on the throne, on the couch, at work, etc., checking and re-checking everything, pressure testing everything, replacing all fluids, replacing all electrical connectors with stainless marine ones then going over them with liquid electrical tape, then doing it again when it wasn't just right, bleeding, feverish, cold weather, angry wife, restless kids, cars sitting outside the garage in 30 below weather, 100 gallons of #1 diesel for the heater later...

70 degrees out today with a light wind, so I got brave and started and it RAN. Who knew. Turned over 6 times and it popped off and idled immediately. What a RELIEF!!!

Kindof a boring shot, but those of you who've done transoms know how important this picture is :)

Boring shot????

That is a portrait of beauty my friend. CONGRATS!!! She's looking beautiful. I have 44 more days until my deadline approaches. Your web site and that photo in general is what's keeping me going. Thanks Dan!

Looks like you polished that fiberglass really well. I may have to review your explanation of the buffing fiberglass again when it comes time to do the same to mine.

I'll be updating my blog, finally, in a significant way tomorrow (Monday). Until then,

CHEERS MATE!
Nick
